The structure fire that occurred at 801 Moro Street early Thursday morning has been ruled incendiary by fire investigators. Investigators from the Manhattan Fire Department, the Riley County Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Kansas Office of the State Fire Marshal  conducted the origin and cause investigation. Officials are now investigating this fire as arson. It was determined that there was a high probability that it was set intentionally by an unknown subject(s). KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals will spend the next 11 days on the road after completing their best homestand in nearly three decades. Danny Duffy pitched six effective innings and rookie Whit Merrifield had two hits and scored a run as the Kansas City Royals beat the Tampa Bay Rays 6-3 on Wednesday night to complete a 6-0 homestand. Clouds of uncertainty are settling in over USD 383 following a Supreme Court ruling and an impending political battle in Topeka. The Supreme Court is threatening to shut down public schools on July 1 if the Kansas legislatures do not adhere to the ruling of Gannon v. Kansas,which demands the state supply an additional $39 million to schools for the upcoming fiscal year. “I would hope alarm bells are going off in Topeka,” Superintendent Bob Shannon remarked at Wednesday night’s board meeting. Topeka – Although Kansas collected $69.2 million more than the previous fiscal year to date, total tax receipts through May were $5.1 billion or $73.8 million less than estimates. Individual income tax receipts for May were $58 million less than expected while corporate income tax receipts were $15 million below estimates. The Rock Creek school board has offered Kevin Logan a contract to be the new superintendent for the USD 323 school district.  Logan has accepted the offer and the school board will meet soon to officially approve the contract.  His duties will officially begin July 1st.   Logan is currently serving as principal at Lyons Middle School and has served in that position since 2008.  Previously, he served as a teacher and coach at Palco High School and Hesston High School. Officers with the Riley County Police Department arrested Jeffrey Hughes, 43, of Manhattan while at the Riley County Police Department on May 31st, 2016 at approximately 7:40 PM. Hughes was arrested on a warrant for Probation Violation through Riley County District Court. He was given a bond of $5,000.00 and at the time of this report was confined at the Riley County Jail. On May 28th, 2016 at approximately 11:53 PM, members of the Riley County Police Department conducted a traffic stop in the 2200 block of Seth Child Road in Manhattan.  Subsequent to this stop, officers seized approximately 1.7 grams of methamphetamine, 2.4 grams of marijuana, as well as other controlled substances to include illegal prescription drugs.  Numerous items of drug paraphernalia were also located and seized as part of this investigation.
