It was a meeting of the minds Monday afternoon, as city officials from Clemson, South Carolina sat down to talk with their Manhattan equals. The meeting room at the Hilton Garden Inn was packed as various tid-bits about the way each city operates, were shared. As Manhattan grapples with the issue of rental inspection, staff from Clemson shared how they’ve resolved a similar struggle. “It’s not a money maker, but its a problem solver,” said one staff member of the program. Clemson officials put a rental inspection program into place 16 years ago. The program generates roughly $80,000.00 per year…
Officials with the Riley County Police Department announced an arrest for aggravated assault, aggravated battery, and aggravated robbery along with criminal threat and conspiracy to commit attempted aggravated robbery earlier Monday morning. The arrest was a result of an investigation which began in the 1000 block of N. 8th Street in Manhattan on March 6, 2016 at approximately 5:00 AM. Police arrested Jacob Sifford, 21, of Manhattan, Kansas for the aforementioned offenses after an incident where a firearm was brandished and police say Andrew Kjellin, 22, of Manhattan became the victim. This year’s Fake Patty’s Day was real busy for Riley County police and EMS personnel. Riley County EMS Director Larry Couchman told Riley County commissioners Monday morning that warm, sunny weather and no conflicting events in town — perhaps other than the state presidential caucus — resulted in a big turnout for Manhattan’s annual fake holiday Saturday. “It was a very busy Fake Patty’s Day,” he said. “I would say it was actually a busier year for us — which is a trend we’ve been seeing the last couple years.” Couchman said EMS crews saw 139 patients for the 36-hour…
Officers with the Riley County Police Department filed a report for aggravated battery Saturday at about 8:40 PM for an incident that occurred between 7:00 PM and 8:40 PM in the 2200 block of College Avenue. Police responded to the emergency room of Via Christi Hospital to take a report and begin an investigation into a gunshot wound. Officers listed Jaronne White, 26, of Kansas City, Kansas as the victim after being shot in the leg by an unknown person while at a house party. A Manhattan man who was pursued on foot by Riley County Police officers into City Park after a shooting in Aggieville during the early morning hours last May has been sentenced to more than four years in prison. Mark Self was sentenced Monday morning to 52 months for attempted involuntary manslaughter to run consecutively with 6 months for aggravated weapons violation, to be served with KDOC. Self also faces 24 months post-release supervision. Self fired 9 rounds in the alley behind Tubby’s last May after a bar fight which started inside. Self was illegally in possession of a fire arm. Riley County firefighters had a very busy Sunday, with one fire burning about 55 acres off I-70. Fire Chief Pat Collins tells KMAN the call came in just before 10 p.m. at Milepost 320 on I 70. A car that was on fire pulled off on the north shoulder of the West bound lane and caught the ditch on fire, which spread to 55 acres. 20 trucks and 44 firefighters were called in from the Riley County Fire Stations of Konza Station, Hunters Island, Zeandale, Tatarrax and Tuttle Cove. The Geary County Sheriff’s Department responded to an injury accident Sunday morning in the 14,000 block of Moyer Ranch Road involving a school bus. Reports indicate Dana Pleas of Junction City, was traveling west bound in a 1999 GMC Bus when she lost control striking an embankment. Two juveniles were transported to the Geary Community Hospital for nonlife threatening injuries.
BOSTON (AP) An 80-year-old man who admitted running a sprawling multistate marijuana-dealing operation faces sentencing this week. Marshall Dion pleaded guilty to several charges under a plea agreement with prosecutors. A federal judge postponed Dion’s sentencing scheduled for last month. She asked prosecutors and Dion’s lawyers to submit written arguments on why the proposed sentence in the plea agreement is up to seven years in prison when federal sentencing guidelines call for 30 years.
