A Belvue man has been sentenced to life in prison, with no eligibility for parole for at least 25 years–for the 2014 murder of his 70-year-old uncle. Christopher Arand learned his fate Thursday morning in Pottawatomie County District Court, with Judge Jeff Elder saying what tipped the scale was Arand’s mental illness and that the suspect’s family, which also is the victim Larry Arand’s family, had indicated support. CHEROKEE, Okla.  A magnitude 4.7 earthquake rattled northern Oklahoma and southern Kansas early Thursday. According to the National Earthquake Information Center, the quake happened at 1:42 a.m. and was centered about 8 miles southwest of Cherokee. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from the quake, which was felt as far away as the Kansas City area. National Earthquake Information Center geophysicist Randy Baldwin says Oklahoma has seen more than 20 magnitude 4 quakes this year.

At Wednesday night’s regular school board meeting, Manhattan/Ogden board members refined their action plan to replace Superintendent Bob Shannon this summer as he retires. Search facilitators based out of Topeka laid out the progress and open options for board members to decide upon, such as timelines for progress and smaller details. After a lengthy discussion and some fine tuning, the board decided on finalizing their application deadline date at January 4th in order to give applicants and facilitators a break for the holidays. Updated 11:30 a.m. Thursday: After nearly four days, a Riley County jury has found a Manhattan man guilty of Attempted First Degree Murder and Battery. Riley County Attorney Barry Wilkerson indicates they are very satisfied with the verdict involving Samuel Dartez. Wilkerson adds they are happy for the victim and hope she can move past the life of physical and emotional trauma. The defense rested its case and closing arguments were heard Wednesday afternoon. A Junction City doctor was bound over as charged Wednesday at a preliminary hearing for aggravated sexual battery. Allan Holiday was taken into custody last July after a report of an alleged aggravated sexual battery of a 16-year-old juvenile male. The alleged victim testified at the hearing. Junction City Police at the time of the arrest indicated Holiday was arrested following an investigation of an incident reportedly occurring at a residence in Junction City. Holiday’s arraignment has been set for January 22nd. Holiday has served as an orthopedic surgeon at Geary Community Hospital.

COLBY-A heavy winter storm dumped more than a foot of snow in northwest Kansas, forcing the closure of at least one area highway. The National Weather Service says the heaviest snowfall was from Atwood to Colby, where about 20 inches of snow was recorded early Wednesday. Heavy snowfall was also reported in Sharon Springs, which got about a foot of snow, and Goodland, which recorded about 7 inches of snow. The Kansas Department of Transportation says a section of U.S. Highway 36 west of Atwood was closed Wednesday because of the weather. U.S. Interstate 70 in western Kansas reopened earlier…
