A 94-page petition has been filed by Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt’s office with the U-S Supreme Court in the Luis Aguirre murder case, involving the 2009 murders of Tanya and Juan Maldonado. The  Petition for Writ of Certiorari asks two main questions–Whether a request to temporarily cease questioning is a clear and unequivocal assertion of the right to remain silent under the Fifth Amendment? And whether the use of the equivocal phrase “I guess” along with an explicitly expressed desire to continue talking to police is a clear and unequivocal assertion of the right to remain silent under the Fifth Amendment? The petition goes on to…

TOPEKA — A major financial rating agency describes Kansas’ new school funding law as “negative” for local districts’ credit and creating financial stress for some of them. Moody’s Investors Service issued a report Friday citing a new annual budget for the state’s largest school district in Wichita that calls for higher local taxes and spending cuts. The new law enacted in April replaced the state’s former per-student aid formula with grants based on districts’ previous funding. It was designed to provide stable funding. But Moody’s said the new law “disadvantages” growing districts by not automatically increasing their aid. Gov. Sam…

OSU’s Ben Grogan nailed a 37-yard field goal with 32 seconds left to hand the Wildcats their first loss of the season. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins clubhouse, clouded so often this season by fog machines for the post-victory dance parties, was crystal clear and eerily quiet following the 160th game on the schedule. This postseason bid by the upstart Twins took a big hit. Ben Zobrist hit an RBI double in the eighth inning against struggling All-Star Glen Perkins, and the Kansas City Royals topped the Twins 3-1 on Friday night behind a strong start from Chris Young. “You can feel it,” Twins manager Paul Molitor said. “It’s deflating for sure.” Perkins, hampered by neck and back trouble that led…
