Concerns about a tax lid approved at the 11th hour by state legislators this past session were again discussed at Monday’s Intergovernmental meeting, with Riley County officials asking for support in challenging the change next session. The measure, which requires a vote by the public for increases in property tax increases over the rate of inflation by 2018, has some issues–but Riley County Commissioner Robert Boyd told KMAN Monday he was pleased with the support he felt from other governmental groups. Riley County commissioners agreed to modify the speed limit for Skyway Drive in front of the Manhattan Regional Airport Monday morning. Riley County Public Works Director Leon Hobson informed commissioners that Skyway Drive will return to county ownership since work on K-18 has been completed. The Kansas Department of Transportation has been overseeing the road since. The speed limit is 40 mph for the road. Commissioners directed Hobson to increase the speed to 50 mph from Scenic Drive to the airport and to 55 mph from the airport to Ogden. “KDOT had established the speed limits that are currently there,”…

A California man who was arrested in Wabaunsee County with 15 pounds of heroin was sentenced Monday to 46 months in federal prison, according to U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom. Juan Carlos Ahumada, 21, of San Fernando, California, pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute heroin. In his plea, he admitted he was hired to drive a load of heroin from California to Kansas City. On June 25, 2014, a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper stopped Ahumada on eastbound Interstate 70 in Wabaunsee County. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Organizers of a wedding expo geared toward same-sex couples say the November event in Topeka will give businesses a chance to let the gay community know they want their business. The Kansas Equality Wedding Expo is scheduled for Nov. 22 at the Maner Conference Center, with some of the proceeds from the $5 entrance fee to benefit Topeka Pride. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A young would-be robber wielding an unusual weapon demanded cigarettes but ended up getting nervous and leaving a Wichita QuikTrip empty-handed. The Wichita Eagle reports a boy between 10 and 12 years old walked into the convenience store shortly after 5 a.m. Sunday and confronted the lone clerk with a paint scraper. Police spokesman Sgt. Roger Runft says the small-statured child stated it was a robbery, and the clerk asked what he wanted. Runft says the boy wanted cigarettes but the clerk asked him for an ID. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A second person has been arrested in the shooting death of a Wichita woman in her home. KSNW-TV  reports that the 22-year-old Wichita suspect was arrested Sunday on suspicion of first-degree murder, aggravated burglary, aggravated robbery, theft of property of service and criminal use of a financial card. Her bond is set $250,000. Her arrest comes just more than a week after 21-year-old man was arrested on felony murder charges in the death of Jacquelyn Harvey. The intersection of 11th and Fremont where construction recently started will be closed to thru traffic on Wednesday, Sept. 30. In order to safely remove pavement from the area, the contractor will close the intersection for less than 24 hours. Travelers are encouraged to detour to Juliette Avenue or 14th Street. The intersection should reopen before the start of business on Thursday, Oct. 1. Lane restrictions will continue after this closure, and detours will remain in place for pedestrians and bicyclists. Motorists are urged to use caution in the area.

September sales tax numbers are up for Manhattan, with about $893,165 collected compared to nearly $832,165 last year at the same time. That shows a positive impact on the Manhattan budget of close to $78,643. Manhattan Finance Director Bernie Hayen says not only have the 2015 reports been good, they also have been consistently reported on the 24th of every month this year. An injury accident early Saturday morning led to a severe head injury for a Manhattan teenager, according to information released Monday morning. Kishankumar Vaghasia, 19, who was a passenger in the vehicle involved and was transported to Topeka for medical care. In connection with the accident Riley County Police announced Monday they are investigating an aggravated battery, DUI, reckless driving, and minor in consumption incident which occurred in the 2300 block of Deep Creek Road outside of Manhattan Saturday at approximately 1:00 AM.
