K-State Police identified a student found dead on campus Saturday. Police have identified the victim as 25-year-old Jacob Horton, freshman in education. The campus police department was notified of a possible deceased person in a parking lot on the Manhattan campus, Saturday morning. Upon arrival, officers found Horton in a vehicle deceased of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Office of Student Life and Counseling Services are offering counseling and assistance to students and employees affected by the student’s death.

KANSAS CITY, KAN. – A Kansas City, Kan., man was sentenced Monday to 12 years in federal prison for his part in a drug trafficking organization that is alleged to have distributed large amounts of methamphetamine, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said. Joshua Thomas Alvarez, 26, Kansas City, Kan., pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine. In his plea, he admitted that in July 2012 the FBI identified a major drug trafficking ring operating in Kansas City, Kan. PITTSBURG, Kan. (AP) Developers of a southeast Kansas casino say a Shawnee County judge’s ruling clears the way for construction of the state’s fourth nontribal casino to begin. Judge Larry Hendricks last week rejected arguments made in a challenge to a decision by the state to award the southeast Kansas project to Kansas Crossing Casino and Hotel. The Pittsburg Morning Sun reports the $70 million proposal in Crawford County was the smallest of three submitted to the state Gaming Facility Review Board. GARDEN PLAIN, Kan. (AP) Shrinking farm incomes are putting pressure on Kansas farm co-ops to merge as a way to help producers cut their costs. The Wichita Eagle reports that Farmers Cooperative Elevator in Garden Plain will vote in about six weeks on whether to merge with co-ops in Anthony and Kiowa. Andale Farmers Co-Op voted in December to merge with Kanza Co-op in the Pratt County town of Iuka. FORT RILEY, Kan. – A Soldier assigned to the 1st Infantry Division died in Junction City, Kansas. Sgt. Laird Camron Landis, an infantryman with Company C, 2nd Battalion, 34th Armor Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Inf. Div., was found dead in his home April 1. Landis deployed to Afghanistan in 2010 and to Kuwait in 2014. His home of record is Redmond, Kansas. He joined the Army in February 2010 and arrived at Fort Riley in 2014. Worrell (59) of 4240 Kaw Road Manhattan, KS was manipulating a handgun at his residence when it accidentally discharged. When the handgun discharged the bullet struck his son Travis J. Fatality crashes were reported in two area counties Sunday evening.  Michael Folk, 38, of Iola died in a motorcycle accident on U-S 24 just east of Belvue in Pottawatomie County. The Kansas Highway Patrol reports Folk was westbound on 24 when his 1992 Harley Davidson motorcycle left the roadway to the right and overturned. Over 35 Riley County firefighters spent most of the afternoon Saturday saving homes and putting out wildfires. Riley County Fire Chief Pat Collins says the first fire of the day was called in at 12:52 PM at 6611 Golden Shores, in the Golden shores subdivision South of Randolph. It only burned about two acres in the cedars around some houses.
