The Kansas Highway Patrol responded to an injury accident over the weekend on 170, one mile west of K-18. A 2009 Ford Focus, driven by Sharaya Bearman (21) of Topeka, was travelling west on I-70 near mile post 302 when it crashed into the rear bumper of a 2012 Kia Optima, driven by Taniesha (37) Ray of Junction City. The accident occurred when the Focus failed to slow down for emergency vehicles. Both Bearman and Ray were transported to Geary County Community Hospital with unknown injuries. The KHP reports that both drivers were wearing seat belts.

Riley County Police arrested a Manhattan man over the weekend for criminal damage to property. Scott Poister (40) was picked up on the 1000 block of Moro Street shortly after 10 Saturday morning. He was charged with multiple counts of criminal damage to property and was held at the Riley County Jail on an $11,000 bond.

After losing the first two games of the weekend set in Lubbock, K-State head coach Brad Hill reminded his team that there was still something to accomplish against the Red Raiders…try to avoid the sweep. The Wildcats nearly did just that. A lot of activity this past week and coming up in Geary County Court, including a plea in what was originally an aggravated sexual battery case. Junction City orthopedic surgeon Dr. Allan Holiday entered pleas of guilty to two counts of endangering a child. As KMAN reported last July, Holiday was arrested after an incident involving a 16-year-old juvenile male.The victim testified at Holiday’s preliminary hearing in November. Junction City Police at the time of the arrest indicated Holiday was taken into custody following an investigation of an incident occurring at a Junction City residence. Manhattan High’s Science Olympiad team placed 3rd overall (2nd in Large School Division) April 2nd at the State competition held at Wichita State University. They received 6 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze medals, finishing only 10 points behind the first place team. The coaches are Pat Lamb, Dick Nelson and Craig Ackerman.

TOPEKA — Local property taxes could rise across Kansas under an education funding bill approved by legislators. Critics also contend the distribution of state dollars would become less fair to poor school districts. Republican supermajorities in both the House and Senate passed the plan last month to comply with a state Supreme Court order in February to improve funding for poor schools. They hoped to head off the court’s threat to shut down schools statewide if lawmakers didn’t fix education funding problems by June 30. Republican Gov. The Kansas State University Police Department is currently investigating the death of a K-State student, according to a press release sent to KMAN Saturday afternoon. On Saturday at approximately 11:09 a.m., the K-State police department was notified of a possible deceased person in a parking lot on the Manhattan campus. Upon arrival, officers found a male student deceased in a vehicle of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation is ongoing and the name of the student is not being released pending notification of family.

TOPEKA — Kansas is reporting that its tax collections came close to hitting projections in March, falling short by less than $2 million. The report Friday from the Department of Revenue said the state collected almost $447.8 million in taxes last month, when it expected to take in $449.4 million. The shortfall was about four-tenths of 1 percent. Sales and insurance premium taxes exceeded expectations. But since the fiscal year began in July 2015, the state still has collected 1.9 percent less in taxes than anticipated. The $4.13 billion collected is about $81 million less than expected.
