Riley County Police engaged in a nearly 12 hour standoff Sunday. Officers received the first of several 911 calls from 4400 River Road, an isolated, rural farmhouse in Riley County just before 7:30 a.m. The sole occupant of the home, a 64-year-old man notified police that he was armed and dangerous. As officers attempted to conduct a welfare check, a shot was fired from inside the house. Follow-up investigation revealed that the man had previously threatened relatives and intended to harm himself. A stand-off ensued during which more shots were fired from inside of the house. OAKLAND, Calif. — Billy Burns’ speed, along with a little luck, helped Oakland win its first home series. Josh Reddick’s sacrifice fly off Joakim Soria broke an eighth-inning tie and lifted the Oakland Athletics over the Kansas City Royals 3-2 Sunday. TOPEKA — Attorney General Derek Schmidt says a law signed by Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback last week satisfies the state’s constitutional duty to provide equitable funding to public schools. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports Schmidt filed a brief with the state Supreme Court on Friday urging it to withdraw its threat to close the state’s schools. The court ruled in February that the state wasn’t giving its poorest districts their fair share of funding, and the justices threatened to shut down schools statewide if the problem wasn’t fixed by June 30. The new law makes technical changes in how state dollars are distributed.…

A Junction City man and woman connected to Topeka and Riley County burglaries were arrested Sunday. The Junction City Police Department received information Sunday that two subjects wanted in reference to an aggravated assault that had taken place in Topeka on Friday may be located in an apartment on Dreiling Road in Junction City. It was also learned that one of the subjects was wanted for questioning in reference to several burglaries that had taken place in Riley County. An Ogden man was arrested early Friday morning for an outstanding warrant and drug charges. Dereck J. Williams, 22, of Ogden, was arrested in the 1000 block of Meadowbrook Lane in Manhattan on Friday morning at approximately 1:31 a.m. during a traffic stop. Williams was taken into custody on an outstanding arrest warrant issued by the Geary County District Court for the offense of criminal threat. The incident of criminal threat reportedly occurred on Feb. 10 in Geary County. Williams’ bond for the warrant was set at $5,000. MCPHERSON — One man is dead after being shot during a physical altercation with two Kansas sheriff’s deputies who were trying to serve an arrest warrant. Kansas Bureau of Investigation spokesman Mark Malik says the man, whose name was not released, physically resisted being arrested at 3 p.m. Thursday before being shot with a Taser without success. Malik says the man repeatedly struck one of the deputies, attacked a second deputy who ordered him to stop, and then resumed striking the first deputy. TOPEKA — Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback has a new proposal designed to end his state’s ongoing battle with Missouri to lure businesses across the border in the Kansas City area. But the proposal Brownback outlined Friday would require Missouri to weaken a 2014 law that it enacted in hopes of ending the border war. And Missouri lawmakers are scheduled to end their annual session in mid-May. Brownback’s plan was outlined in a directive to his commerce secretary.
