Emergency personnel responded to the 11000 block of Rimrock Road in Manhattan on Tuesday at approximately 1:40 a.m. for a report of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.  When responding officers arrived they found Donald Pickering, 65, of Manhattan was deceased. Pickering contacted the Riley County Police Department Communications Center Dispatch prior to his death, however, he did not express a desire to harm himself at that time. Police do not suspect foul play based on information and evidence collected at the scene. The Wamego City Commission approved a salary adjustment for all positions at Tuesday’s meeting. City Manager Merl Page said they periodically performed salary surveys with a core group of comparable cities competitive wages. Page said the overall analysis show the need for a salary adjustment for all positions, excluding the City Manager. Page asked the Commission to approve $20,000 for a mid-year salary adjustment for the current pay period. Approval was given by a vote of 5 to 0. On February 8, 2011, Manhattan became just the second city in Kansas — the other Lawrence — to add sexual orientation to it’s anti-discrimination ordinance. Then in May of the same year, the Manhattan city commission repealed the change after April elections altered the commission’s makeup.
