A Manhattan man was arrested just after midnight Sunday morning in the 500 block of Colorado St for drug charges. Leon Friedrich Houk, 31, was arrested for unlawful possession of illegal drugs and driving with a suspended liciense. At the time of this report Houk is confined in the Riley County Jail with a $6,000 bond.

A rollover accident in Riley County sent two people to the hospital early Friday evening. The crash occured shortly after 5 p.m. on Interstate 70 when a 2002 Ford Explorer driving westbound swerved onto the right shoulder, over-corrected and then overturned into the median. The SUV came to a rest in the eastbound lanes of I-70. The driver of the vehicle, Peter Clark, 18, of Overland Park, was transported to Via Christi in Manhattan, along with a 19-year-old passenger, Laura Herter of Shawnee. The report from Kansas Highway Patrol indicates both parties were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.
Manhattan picks up a split on Friday night at the MHS gym as the girls fall but the boys pick up a victory. The MHS girls had a tough match up with Washburn Rural, losing 45-41. UPDATE: 4:07 p.m. The Riley County Police Department released more information on Friday morning’s house fire in the 600 block of Yuma Street in Manhattan. The RCPD said emergency crews responded to the 600 block of Yuma Street at approximately 10:48 a.m. Friday after an officer made contact with a community member, a 43-year-old male, who had sustained a significant cut to his arm and was bleeding profusely. Officers with the Riley County Police Department are investigating a vehicle burglary and criminal use of a financial card. 22-year old Taylor Kacks of Manhattan reported an unknown subject entered an unsecured vehicle in the 900 block of Bluemont. Police were told that a Macbook Pro, wallet, phone, Wacom Tablet, chargers, financial cards and cash were removed from the vehicle. The total estimated loss is approximately $3,800. Suspects are currently unknown.
Riley County Police ended a bicycle theft spree after making an arrest on Thursday morning around 11:30 a.m. Prior to the arrest the RCPD alerted the community to a rash of bicycle thefts in Manhattan via Twitter and Facebook. Two people were arrested in a drug bust on Thursday evening in Manhattan. Around 8:15 p.m., Riley County Police executed a search warrant at 400 Fremont Street Apartment #1 where they found narcotic drugs and paraphernalia. Officers arrested Jamie Berges, 26, of Manhattan, on the offenses of possession of an opiate , opium, or narcotic drug, possession of a hallucinogenic drug, and possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to manufacture, plant, or cultivate a controlled substance. COLUMBUS — A former southeast Kansas high school coach has been sentenced to more than eight years in prison for having sex with a 15-year-old girl and getting her pregnant. Forty-seven-year-old Larry “Scott” Madden faces lifetime court supervision upon his release under the sentence imposed this week in Cherokee County District Court. The Joplin Globe reports that he also will be required to register as a sex offender. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Officials are trying to hammer out a deal to address competing water needs of south-central Kansas irrigators and a national wildlife refuge that’s lost considerable water to them.
