Updated Wednesday: Riley County Police indicated officers recovered a pyrotechnic mortar or firework. It reportedly was disposed of properly and was not a danger. ### The Manhattan Fire Department and Hazmat units responded to a report of a suspicious package at around 4:30 Tuesday afternoon behind a residence on Bertrand Street near the intersection of Manhattan Avenue. People were asked to avoid the area while authorities investigated. We will have more information from the Manhattan Fire Department on this incident as it becomes available.

Junction City Police are investigating a child abuse case, reported Tuesday, June 9th. Junction City Police received a report of an alleged Child Abuse that had occurred in Junction City. Police identified a suspect in the matter as Ft. Riley soldier, Brian A. Mastin, 29. Police received information a short time later that Mastin was possibly suicidal and was located at his home in Junction City at 1515 W. Ash #4. A Manhattan man accused of running a stop sign and pulling in front of a pregnant woman’s vehicle appeared for his preliminary hearing in Riley County District Court Tuesday morning and was bound over by the judge. Ryan Routson will be arraigned on June 22 at 9:30 a.m. in the Riley County District Court in front of Judge David Stutzman. He will face counts that include involuntary manslaughter while DUI, aggravated battery while DUI along with unlawful possession of methamphetamine. After considerable discussion, Pottawatomie County Commissioners Monday approved spending $18,000 with BG Consultant for a space needs assessment of the county’s buildings and facilities. Project Engineer Karen Weathers and Project Manager/Architect Clint Hibbs presented to the commission, with Weathers stressing this is one step in the process. Police filed a report for aggravated criminal sodomy in the city limits of Manhattan on June 7th at approximately 3:45 p.m. for an incident that occurred the night prior. Officers found that a 19-year-old male and a 22-year-old male victim were involved in unwanted sexual activity with a male whom they had met and were staying with overnight. Wamego’s USD 320 Board of Education opposed several requests due to budget constraints. At Monday’s meeting, the Soccer proposal that was presented at the last meeting was reviewed. Wamego’s USD 320 Board of Education recognized student’s achievements in sports, organizations and forensics. Golf Coach Michael Petermann introduced the Wamego High School State Golf participants that qualified for state and placed 3rd. The team consisted of Ryan Elder, 9th place, Parker Waters, 10th Place; Cooper Spears, Spencer Stewart, AJ Sramek, and Noah Hildreth.
