Outstanding board members earned recognition recently. Wamego’s USD 320 Superintendent Denise O’Dea, presented plaques to outgoing board members for their years of service, during Monday night’s board of education meeting. Recipients included Mark Bettencourt who served four years, Richie Chrest who served 13 years and Richard Weixelman who served 32 years. Weixelman was honored for serving 20 of the 32 years in a leadership position, with 10 years as President and 10 years as Vice President. An attempt to stop a vehicle in Geary county for speeding led to a law enforcement chase Monday, with three Kansas City men ending up in the hospital. The Kansas Highway patrol reports the incident occurred Monday morning on eastbound I-70 at the Grandview Plaza exit. A 2000 Audi driven by Arturo Molina, 20, fled after an attempt to stop him, and reportedly drove recklessly through traffic, with the vehicle exiting the interstate at the Grandview Plaza exit but coming to a stop after striking an embankment. A Fort Riley soldier who entered a plea agreement in the February 2014 murder of a five week old baby was sentenced Monday in Riley County District Court to 191 months with the Kansas Department of Corrections. Judge Meryl Wilson announced the sentence for Alexander McConnell, which involved 123 months for the murder count, and 34 months each for the other two child abuse related counts against McConnell, to run consecutively. Riley County commissioner Bob Boyd didn’t mince words when it came to his displeasure with the state legislature and ultimately his own party during Monday morning’s county commission meeting. Sunday night the state legislature narrowly passed a tax bill in the Senate and will look for passage in the House Monday afternoon, though reports from Topeka indicate that there’s no certainty that will happen.
