The housing market continues to be on the upswing in Riley County, county appraiser Greg McHenry told county commissioners during their meeting Thursday morning. “It is definitely true that the market has picked up a bit this spring,” McHenry said. “We’ve seen more sales than a year ago.” McHenry reported that there were 453 home sales this year through May 29, which he said is roughly 45 more than during the same period of time a year ago. Ahead of its deployment to Kuwait, the 1st Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade will conduct a ceremony 10 a.m. June 10 on Cavalry Parade Field in which leaders will case the brigade colors and conduct a change of command and responsibility ceremony. The current command team of Col. Robert A. Law III and Command Sgt. Maj. Tomeka N. O’Neal will transfer authority to Col. Allen T. Cassell and Command Sgt. Maj. Stephen M. Harris. Later this month, about 260 Soldiers from the brigade headquarters will deploy for nine months in support of Operation Spartan Shield and Operation Inherent Resolve.

The rain wasn’t the only thing pounding the pavement Thursday morning. Officers and employees of the Riley County Police Department joined forces to complete the Law Enforcement Torch Run. One of several events the department participates in, as a way to give back to the community they proudly serve. The Torch Run benefits The Special Olympics of Kansas. Officers in the north eastern portion of Manhattan are investigating a rash of vehicle burglaries which occurred on June 2, 2015 overnight. Victims in the 3200 and 3300 blocks of Valleywood Drive in Manhattan reported that their unsecured vehicles were entered by an unknown subject and items had been removed without their permission. These items included a GPS unit, phone chargers, binoculars, Harley Davidson suspension shocks, a flashlight, and a hunting knife all with a total estimated loss of $1,580.00. Manhattan/Ogden USD 383 School board members took a moment during Wednesday night’s board meeting to consider the recognition of a Manhattan High School football coach who previously left such a large legacy, that current principal Greg Hoyt asked to honor the former coach by adding his name to the stadium.  The coach mentored Hoyt and others through their high school athletic careers. He also led the Indians to four State Championship game appearances in the 1980’s, winning the title in 1988 with a victory over Lawrence High.
