The Flint Hills Discovery Center Foundation was the recipient of $750,000 Wednesday morning. The gift was presented by Bob Krause and Marty Vanier, who have a long history of philanthropy in supporting Kansas State University and the Flint Hills region. While Krause is a native of Chicago, Illinois, Vanier is a Kansas native. Both commented on the center’s immersive experience theater. Vanier said the property they own allows them to live the experiences they saw in the Tallgrass Prairie film room in real life everyday. The Wamego City Commission heard several annual reports. At Tuesday’s meeting, City Manager Merl Page introduced Recreation Commission Director Kristin Jones and Advisory Board Chair Joe Steele. Jones reported that 2014 was a good year, and went over the attendance numbers for the different programs. According to Jones, the programs offered by Wamego’s Recreation Department encompass all age groups, and were well attended. Housing Authority Property Manager, Joni Chrest reported 100 percent occupancy, with 11 on the waiting list. Riley County Police issued a press release Wednesday morning regarding a search warrant that was executed at 717 Riley Lane here in Manhattan, on Tuesday morning, in reference to a series of recent motor vehicles thefts and burglaries. At the conclusion of the search warrant, Jeremy Spaur (30) and Nicole Holt (20), who both reside at the residence, were placed under arrest for numerous property and drug offenses. Spaur’s was arrested for 22 different charges, including eight counts of motor vehicle theft, seven counts of burglary, and three counts of criminal damage to property. Holt was arrested on 13 different offenses. …

On Tuesday night the Manhattan city commission wound up for a longer night of tackling issues within the community. Some good news came from the Flint Hills Discovery Center foundation as the commission approved an anonymous donation to the facility of $750,000. According to Bruce Snead the donation is the first of its kind, and he hopes it heralds others following in its wake. Haley Texada scored 22 points in her final regular season home game and Kansas State overcame a 13-point second half deficit as the Wildcats wrapped up the 2014-15 slate with a 59-55 win over West Virginia in Women’s Basketball action Tuesday night at Bramlage Coliseum.
