A Topeka man was sentenced Friday to 12 years in federal prison for committing robberies at businesses in Topeka and Manhattan, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said. Christopher James Wilhoite, 26, Topeka, Kan., pleaded guilty to two counts of commercial robbery and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm in furtherance of a robbery. In his plea, Wilhoite admitted that on March 29, 2014, he robbed a clerk at Car Toyz, 5849 S.W. 21st in Topeka. The store sells mobile audio, video and vehicle security systems. The Kansas Court of Appeals has reversed a Riley County District court judgement in a controversial sentencing involving an involuntary manslaughter case. The Miles Theurer June 2013 sentence of 60 days of jail time and 36 months of house arrest has been vacated,and the case is to go back to district court for re-sentencing. The Riley County Attorney’s office filed a notice of appeal almost immediately after the sentence was announced by Judge John Bosch, indicating Theurer’s conviction carried a presumption of incarceration in a state prison of 38-43 months. Unemployment numbers in the Manhattan area are down across the board–with the Manhattan metro area showing a 3.4 percent uemployment rate for October, compared to four percent in September and 4.6 percent this time last year. The city of Manhattan by itself had a rate of only 2.9 percent, down from 3.5 percent both in September and October of last year. Riley County’s unemployment rate was 3.1 percent, down half a percent from the month before and Pottawatomie County’s rate was three percent, followed by Clay County’s 2.9 percent.
