Kansas has been utilizing KITE (Kansas Interactive Testing Engine) in public schools. The tests within the engine seem to be causing administration, and students, a few headaches. For this reason, Executive Director of Teaching and Learning, Carol Adams brought this topic up during Wednesday evening’s Manhattan/Ogden USD 383 School Board meeting. According to Adams, the testing window for these assessments opened on March 10th, and the school district began testing students after spring break. The sunset zoo announced the death of its only tiger Wednesday in a news release. Manhattan, KS, March 26, 2014 – Sunset Zoo bid farewell today to Bob Jr., an 18-year-old male Amur tiger. Bob was euthanized Wednesday morning after receiving treatment for chronic kidney and arthritis problems over the last several years. The tiger had been under close veterinary observation, showing symptoms of renal (kidney) failure and suffering from severe arthritis. Johnson County has been ranked as the healthiest county in the state, according to the fifth annual County Health Rankings, released Wednesday by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute (UWPHI). Woodson County, located in southeast Kansas, was ranked the lowest in overall health outcomes this year. The County Health Rankings rank the overall health of nearly every county in all 50 states. As one Manhattan resident filed for candidacy, the representative currently in that spot announced he will non re-file. The Kansas Secretary of State website indicates Republican Ben Wilson has filed for the 64th district position. According to a recent press release, Wilson lives near Ogden and teaches violin lessons in Manhattan. “I love working with kids, and I have a passion for education. Kansas State University student Ross Allen, a junior in economics and philosophy and minoring in nonprofit leadership studies, has advanced to the final round of the 2014 Harry S. Truman Scholarship competition. Allen, Soldier, will interview Monday, April 7, in Kansas City, Mo., with other finalists from Iowa, Kansas and Missouri. Truman scholarship winners will be announced April 16. The Truman scholarship is a national competition that provides up to $30,000 for graduate study to students committed to future careers in public service.
