Kansas State University student Ross Allen, a junior in economics and philosophy and minoring in nonprofit leadership studies, has advanced to the final round of the 2014 Harry S. Truman Scholarship competition. Allen, Soldier, will interview Monday, April 7, in Kansas City, Mo., with other finalists from Iowa, Kansas and Missouri. Truman scholarship winners will be announced April 16. The Truman scholarship is a national competition that provides up to $30,000 for graduate study to students committed to future careers in public service. SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) Felix Hernandez pitched five innings and rookie Stefen Romero homered, leading the Seattle Mariners to a 9-6 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night. Royals left-hander Bruce Chen surrendered nine runs and 11 hits in four innings, throwing 92 pitches. Alex Gordon homered, doubled and drove in three Royals runs.

After two weeks off, the Manhattan City Commission reconvened Tuesday in what turned out to be a fairly low-key meeting. Tallgrass Brewing Company Tallgrass is in negotiations with Verizon to purchase the old Western Wireless building in Corporate Technology Park, North of the airport.
