The Manhattan City Commission took action on two items and discussed two others during Tuesday night’s meeting. City Auditor The Commission began by reviewing bids for a City Auditor. Of the four bids, Varney and Associates had the lowest at $39,500. Varney and Associates has served as the City’s auditor for the past five years. Kansas law requires Manhattan to undergo an independent audit examination of City finances each fiscal year. The Wamego City Commission heard several board annual reviews at Tuesday’s meeting. Joni Chrest, Wamego Housing Authority, went over the annual update of the 32-unit Housing Authority. She said there are 17 applicants on a waiting list, which will be reduced by one with a recent vacancy. She added that 2012 Improvement Funds were used to renovate 10 units, with floor to ceiling paint and new carpet. The Housing Authority also renewed their contract with the Atchison Housing Authority Consortium. The downtown redevelopment project has seen the opening of a new addition. Tuesday was the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new McDonald’s located on 3rd street. McDonald’s has been in Manhattan since 1972, but has seen a redesign. From the tear down of the old building, a newly established building is in place. Clark Linders, owner of the McDonald’s, explains there is a lot to enjoy with the completion of this 11 year project. “It’s the largest square footage McDonald’s built in the heartland region, which is comprised of about four states,” said Linders. “It’s the latest and greatest of…
A student in Junction City USD 475 has been identified as the source of recurring network issues plaguing the school district’s computers for the last several weeks. Since the 13th of February, USD 475 has been experiencing unexplained network outages caused by an unknown source. After investigation by district IT specialists and staff, a student was identified as suspect behind the network problems. The suspect, a 16 year-old male, was brought into the investigation around 3:00 P.M. today. The network outages appear to be the result of intentional actions by the student. The Kansas Congressional Delegation Tuesday announced the President’s budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2015 designates $300 million to further advance construction on the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) in Manhattan. The move by the Administration signals clear support for completion of the project as a national security priority.The entire delegation and the NBAF Task Force will continue efforts to secure this funding through the appropriations process. A Manhattan woman says she was attacked by two dogs while she was walking her small terrier around Garden Way on Tuesday morning. Sandra Pike is headed to the hospital after she says she was attacked by two pit bull terriers as she rounded a corner in the rear of several apartments. Pike says she just stood still, and called for the owners to come get the dogs off of her. City officials say they will investigate, and the case will begin to go through the standard legal process.
