Manhattan’s Sunset Zoo welcomed 5,584 community members this past weekend for its annual trick-or-treat event, SPOOKtacular. This marks the largest attendance to date for the two-day event. Additionally, Sunday saw record single-day attendance numbers with 3,020 guests exploring the park. Over 20 candy booths, sponsored by local businesses and non-profit organizations, lined the trails of Sunset Zoo this past weekend, as part of the zoo’s Spooktacular event. A Caribbean cruise ship carrying a Dallas health care worker who is being monitored for signs of the Ebola virus is heading back to Texas, US, after being refused permission to dock in Cozumel, Mexico.
After being found guilty of first degree murder in 2012, the man convicted of killing his girlfriend and one year old son will appeal his life sentence. According to media reports out of Topeka, Luis Aguirre appealed his sentence, saying the judge should have suppressed his statements to police after he was read his Miranda Rights. The murders happened back in September of 2009. Reports indicate the bodies were buried in a shallow grave near Ogden. Aguirre’s hearing is set for Tuesday at the Kansas Judicial Center.
NEWTON, Kan. (AP) A Kansas man is accused of breaking into a home and grabbing a 3-year-old child before police wrestled the intruder away. The Hutchinson News reports an officer confronted the suspect around 11 p.m. Thursday in the south-central city of Newton. The suspect and the officer were both injured in a scuffle.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A Kansas man is going to prison for stealing more than $50,000 from a 75-year-old disabled woman. The Sedgwick County district attorney’s office said Friday that 35-year-old Jeremy Glenn, of Mulvane, was sentenced this week to slightly more than three years behind bars. Glenn pleaded no contest to felony theft and possession of methamphetamine. Authorities said Glenn stole from the woman after offering to help clean her home in Derby. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A Kansas National Guard member will be honored next week for helping save a woman from a burning house in Wichita two years ago. Tech. Sgt. Shawn A. Rucker will receive the Airman’s Medal from Maj. Gen. Lee Tafanelli, the Kansas adjutant general. The ceremony will take place Monday at McConnell Air Force Base. Rucker serves with the Guard’s 184th Intelligence Wing.
