WACO, Texas (AP) Juwan Staten made a reverse layup with 3.1 seconds left and West Virginia held on to beat Baylor 66-64 on Tuesday night. The Mountaineers (12-9, 4-4 Big 12) had gone nearly 5 minutes without scoring, blowing an eight-point lead in the process, before Staten drove the baseline and under the basket before making the game-winning shot. He finished with a game-high 15 points and nine assists. Kenny Chery banked in what would have been a game-winning 3-pointer for Baylor (13-7, 1-6), but it came after the buzzer sounded. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas legislators are wrestling with whether they should attempt to limit electronic surveillance and data-mining by state and local government agencies. The House Judiciary Committee held a hearing Tuesday on a bill described by sponsoring Republican Rep. Brett Hildabrand of Shawnee as an effort to curb domestic spying. The panel took no action. The measure would limit state and local agencies’ access to records held by a third party, such as cellphone or electronic banking data. The agency would have to obtain a warrant or get an individual’s consent to access such data. But several law enforcement…
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A bill has been introduced in the Kansas Senate that would alter the way school districts receive additional funding related to capital improvements approved by local voters. The legislation proposed Monday would change the way districts receive state funds to compensate for low overall district wealth. Senate Vice President Jeff King says his proposal would divert state aid that would have been used by districts to repay bonds issued for construction. The intent is to lower local property taxes and provide additional funds to poor districts to provide for instruction and other classroom expenses. The change would…
Rarely-used snowplows have been getting a workout in parts of the Deep South, which is blanketed by up to 3 inches of snow in some areas.
Will the snowy New York City area really reap an estimated $600 million economic boost from the Super Bowl? Probably not. Despite lofty predictions, sports economists say the financial impact of the Super Bowl could fall far below expectations.
Comments from members of the Kansas Congressional delegation representing the Manhattan area are less than complimentary of the President’s state of the Union address. Senator Jerry Moran of Manhattan: “Tonight, Americans heard President Obama’s latest pitch for the same failed policies we’ve dealt with for five years: higher taxes, overregulation and irresponsible spending. Five years into the Washington Democrats’ economy, there are 10.4 million Americans unemployed, the labor force participation rate has plunged to its lowest level in nearly 40 years, median household income has fallen each year, and one in four part-time workers are living below the poverty line.…
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) The federal trial of a Canadian man accused stealing the identity of his dead infant brother has opened in Kansas with lawyers calling the defendant by different names. Prosecutors said in opening statements Tuesday that former Winfield resident Leslie Camick assumed the identity of Wayne Camick, who died in 1958. The government contends Leslie Camick hatched a scheme to flee Canada, where he owed child support, taxes and other obligations, and built a life under the assumed name after coming to the U.S. in 2000. But a defense lawyer repeatedly referred to his client as Wayne Camick,…
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas lawmakers are weighing whether to prohibit tanning parlors from letting minors use their tanning beds. The House Health and Human Services Committee heard testimony Tuesday on the bill. The measure includes a maximum $250 fine for businesses that allow customers younger than 18 to use tanning beds. Proponents said exposure to harmful levels of ultraviolet radiation from tanning beds increases the chances of developing melanoma later in life. But industry representatives say the message should be one of moderation, not abstinence from UV exposure, whether from the sun or from tanning beds. While they support the…
Signs, Signs and more Signs! The Manhattan City Commission pulled out dusty code books and tackled dated sign regulations with City Staff during Tuesday’s work session. “Not only are we hoping to make our regulations as content neutral as we can,” said Chad Bunger, Senior Planner for the City of Manhattan, “but also addressing new technologies that our signs don’t permit today, and one of those being digital signs.” Commissioner, Rich Jankovich supports the idea of allowing businesses to use digital signs, but questioned how they will impact traffic. “The idea is that you need to have a message that’s…
In his annual State of the Union address, President Barack Obama urged legislators across the country to raise the minimum wage, saying “no one who works full time should have to raise a family in poverty.”
