Investigators said Hopkins told police he committed the act because of his wife’s ongoing health problems. 6News Lawrence reports Hopkins appeared Thursday in Douglas County District Court and waived his right to a preliminary hearing, where prosecutors would have presented evidence they could use at a trial. Stegall took the oath of office Friday before a large audience in the Supreme Court chambers with his wife, Ann, holding a Bible. He fills a new, 14th seat on the state’s second-highest court. Stegall’s appointment by the Republican governor received an unusual amount of attention, partly because of his position as Brownback’s chief lawyer. It was also the first Court of Appeals appointment under a law that took effect in July that has the…

NEW ORLEANS (AP) Trevor Knight passed for 348 yards and four touchdowns and #11 Oklahoma took down third-ranked Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, 45-31 on Thursday night. The victory was a sweet one for Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops, who last offseason called talk about the Southeastern Conference being the best league in college football “propaganda.” His team vanquished an Alabama squad that had been ranked No. 1 much of the past three seasons, winning the previous two national titles. AJ McCarron passed for 387 yards and two TDs, but his two interceptions set up Oklahoma TD’s, and his fumble, returned…

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Kansas Honor Flight is planning six more flights for veterans this year. The Hutchinson-based nonprofit group flies veterans for free to visit memorials in Washington D.C. The first two flights are scheduled for April 16-18 and April 30-May 2. Mike VanCampen, president of Kansas Honor Flight, says dates for the other four flights haven’t been scheduled. He says when the group flew veterans to Washington D.C. last July, the temperature was 108, so the group doesn’t plan any trips in July and August this year. The Wichita Eagle reports most of the veterans on the first two…
