A last minute candidate who is not new to the political arena has filed for the Pottawatomie County Commission seat against current commissioner, Gary Yenzer. Dee McKee has announced she will be running for the position. McKee has participated in past election processes, including running for the 51st district seat two years ago. Around 5.5 million dollars of funding could be utilized for additional Riley County culvert, bridge and road projects. During Monday’s county commission meeting, Public Works Director, Leon Hobson presented the commission with a list of these projects. Commissioners discussed the urgency of some projects over others. Two that were discussed were the Fancy Creek road project and the Marlatt/Denison project. The Marlatt/Denison project is a half mile project that involves making three lane roadways, a bike lane, an urban section and a sidewalk. Updated with correction Tuesday evening: All lanes of K-9 in the city of Frankfort in Marshall County will REMAIN CLOSED as cleanup work is underway from Monday’s Union Pacific coal train derailment that occurred around 9:00 a.m.. K-9 will REMAIN CLOSED until further notice between the U.S. 77 junction at Blue Rapids and the K-99 junction in Frankfort. A total of twelve coal cars derailed with heavy damage sustained to the tracks themselves. The Tribe crowned three champions, Chris Melgares in the 3200 meter run, the 4 by 800 meter relay, which Melgares led off, and the 4 by 100 meter relay. Brady Burton, superintendent of USD 384, says for the past 8 years Blue Valley High School students have been given a personal laptop for them to use during the school year. Next school year his district will be adopting a pilot program where 9th graders at Blue Valley High School will be given an iPad instead. “A lot of this is based on budget and on how technology has changed and where it is going,” Burton said. iPads cost less than laptops. Burton says that if the iPad program is successful, it will be extended to other grades.
