The Big Red One held a 9/11 Commemoration Ceremony, Wednesday morning at Fort Riley. Soldiers and their families, local law enforcement and first responders, and family members of soldiers killed in the line of duty, were honored during the ceremony. The ceremony took place in front of the Global War on Terrorism monument (near Cavalry Parade Field), and has been a Fort Riley tradition since the 2001 terrorist attacks.  The monument is a small replica of the twin towers on a pentagon-shaped base and bears the names of Big Red Soldiers who lost their lives in Afghanistan and Iraq. A court martial panel at Fort Riley has convicted an Army Private on all charges and given him the maximum sentence in a murder case from last year. John Hughes has been sentenced to be confined for life without eligibility for parole. In addition Hughes is to be dishonorably discharged, is to forfeit all pay and allowances, and is reduced to E-1 and reprimanded. The court martial for Hughes began last week, with convictions of murder, resisting arrest, false official statements, larceny, and wrongful appropriation. Riley County Police are reporting a couple of arrests of note, including that of Zachery Burch, 24, of Ogden. Burch  was arrested Tuesday morning at approximately 11:00 in the 100 block of N. 4th Street. Burch was arrested for a probation violation and is being held on a no bond warrant at Riley County Jail. Also arrested and still confined is 24 year old Drew Fox, 24, of Manhattan. Fox was arrested for two failure to appear warrants from Riley County and Manhattan. He is being held on a $9,000 bond. After taking a 25-14 loss in set one, K-State volleyball responded by claiming the final three sets over Tulsa on Tuesday night at Ahearn Fieldhouse, 25-23, 25-22, and 25-16.  Kaitlynn Pelger led the Cats with 11 kills, but the match turned once her teammates got involved in the offense.  Dakota Kaufman and Natali Jones each contributed nine kills, while Courtney Traxson had seven. CLEVELAND (AP)   Jeremy Guthrie got a major assist from his defense in pitching six innings, Alcides Escobar hit a rare home run and the Kansas City Royals snapped a six-game losing streak in Cleveland, 6-3 on Tuesday night to close on the Indians and two others in the AL’s cramped wild-card scramble. Guthrie allowed just one run and nine hits, but was helped by three double plays. By Cathy Dawes A large gas leak was reported at Miller Parkway and Arbor Drive in Manhattan at 5:15 Tuesday evening. The leak caused traffic issues, with the off ramp onto Miller Parkway closed for more than three hours. No further problems were reported as a result of the gas leak, with roadways open and operational shortly before 8:30 p.m.

By Cathy Dawes It’s day two in a  Riley County District Court  attempted rape case involving a child under 14. The jury trial got started Tuesday for 29 year old George Ferenz, who was a Fort Riley soldier at the time of his arrest last October. Jury selection began Tuesday morning Ferenz, who had been living in Manhattan, also faces charges of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and aggravated criminal sodomy. PITTSBURG, Kan. (AP) Pittsburg State University has renamed its nursing school for the mother of a prominent alumnus who donated $1 million to the nursing program. KOAM-TV reports that the university renamed the school for the late Irene Ransom Bradley in a ceremony Tuesday. The Independence woman worked as a servant in a private home and died in 1996 at age 90. The gift is from her son, Dr. Fay Bradley, a retired Independence physician who earned a bachelor’s degree in biology at the southeast Kansas university in 1960.
