A Manhattan physician was sentenced Wednesday to five years in federal prison for unlawfully prescribing prescription drugs, according to U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom. Michael P. Schuster (54) of Manhattan, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances. In his plea, Schuster admitted the crime occurred from April 2007 to Aug. 2012, while he was doing business as Manhattan Pain and Spine at 1135 Westport Drive in Manhattan. To carry out daily operations at his clinic he employed up to 12 office staff members at a time, none of whom had lawful authority to distribute controlled substances. He…

A Manhattan man has been sentenced to two years of supervised release in connection with a fatal arson that occurred more than a year ago.   Gavin Hairgrove is also to serve home confinement for six months, following his sentencing Wednesday in U-S District Court.   Hairgrove pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact in the February sixth, 2013 fatal fire at a Manhattan apartment building, which resulted in the death of Vansanta Pallem. Two major intersections will be under construction next week. Beginning Monday, additional turning lanes will be constructed at the Tuttle Creek Boulevard and McCall Road intersection, and at the U.S. Highway 24 and East Poyntz Avenue intersection.  Lane reductions will occur throughout the project at both locations, and delays should be expected.  The projects will begin Monday and are expected to be completed by August 1st. Colton Kalmus pitched five strong innings, and K-State closer Jake Matthys went the rest of the way, earning a rare, four-inning save in a 3-2 victory over Wichita State on Tuesday night at Tointon Family Stadium.  Kalmus gave up just two hits, and one earned run, a solo homer by the Shockers’ Garrett Bayliff in the fourth innning.  Matthys struck out five, and scattered five hits and two walks over his four scoreless frames.  K-State got on the board first when RJ Santigate knocked in two runs with a single in the bottom of the first.  Wichita State scored an unearned…

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) James Loney hit an RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Tampa Bay Rays over the Kansas City Royals 1-0 on Tuesday night. Loney’s grounder to right scored Wil Myers, who snapped an 0-for-15 slump when he reached on an infield single to start the ninth. Myers advanced on a two-out wild pitch by Greg Holland. Twin sisters often have an unbreakable bond, and after starring for four years at Riley County, Madison and Makayla Vargo will carry on their basketball careers together at Washburn University. The Vargos plan to ink their national letters of intent with the Lady Blues next week, following a 22-2 senior campaign that included another trip to the 3A state tournament. Madison and Makayla were both on the all Mid-East League first team this past season, while Madison was also named first team 3A all-state after averaging 18 points per game during her senior season.

Named to the all-Big 12 freshman team last fall, K-State setter Katie Brand has been selected to participate in the US  Collegiate National volleyball team program. Brand earned the spot at a tryout in February, and is one of 36 athletes that will train and compete at the Junior National Championships from June 22nd – July 1st in Minneapolis. Brand is among three players chosen to represent the Big 12 conference on the team.
