HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) Western Energy says at least 500 homes in Hutchinson were without power after an apparent microburst from a storm that dropped about an inch of rain in some areas. The Hutchinson News reports tree branches covered lawns and limbs dangled from power lines Sunday morning. Several streets were blocked with branches before city crews came in and cleared the debris away. A roof and shed in the south part of town also were damaged by the high winds. The National Weather Service office in Wichita says the storm blew through the area around 4 a.m.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) A former Kansas community college basketball player has pleaded no contest to his role in the robbery of his coach and burglary last year of the coach’s dorm room. The Hutchinson News reports 20-year-old Quantel Denson of Grandview, Mo., entered the plea Friday in Reno County. The plea agreement in which prosecutors will recommend three years of probation was reached just before a pretrial hearing was to begin. Denson was accused of giving his dorm key at Hutchinson Community College to co-defendant Daniel Flamma-Sherman of Blue Springs, Mo., who has pleaded no contest to robbery and guilty…

Saturday, July 28, was the beginning and ending of Fire House No 3. Opening in 1968, the old Fire Station No 3 was located at 3131 Anderson Ave.  Forty-four years later, the old station shut down to allow the new Fire House No 3 to open. At the opening ceremony on Saturday, the Manhattan Director of Fire Services, Jerry Snyder, made a few remarks before opening the building to the public. John Jaso drove in four runs and Blake Beavan pitched into the seventh inning to lead the Mariners to a 6-1 victory over the Royals on Friday night, pushing the Mariners to 5-1 against Kansas City this year. LONDON (AP)   The International Olympic Committee is investigating reports that an Irish athlete bet on an opponent to win at a pre-London Games event and cashed in. IOC spokesman Mark Adams says the athlete is alleged to have “bet against themselves prior to the Olympics.” He says the IOC is working with the Irish Olympic Committee to gather information. IOC rules bar athletes from betting on Olympic events, though Adams says the case appears to have “no effect so far on the games.” The Irish Independent reports that an athlete made a $4,800 profit and withdrew $4,435 cash from…

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) First the Los Angeles made the big splash in free agency by getting Albert Pujols. Now they’ve traded for arguably the most sought-after pitcher on the block. The Milwaukee Brewers traded former Kansas City Royals Cy Young winner Zack Greinke to the Angels yesterday for rookie shortstop Jean Segura and two minor league pitchers. The 28-year-old was drafted by Kansas City in 2002 out of high school and will be a free agent after the season.

Army senior staff stopped at Fort Riley on their final leg of a week long tour of six army installations aimed at finding out the health of the force. The Riley County Fair is in full swing as the animals are getting ready for show and exhibits are being put on display. “We just kicked off our quilting expo,” said Ginny Bernard,a Riley County Extension Family and Consumer Sciences Agent.  “So people can come check out the quilts that we have hanging up inside.” The parade has passed and one night of the rodeo is complete, but Friday and Saturday are still packed full of activities. If you drove by Manhattan City Park Friday afternoon, it looked like an outdoor furniture store, with a large amount of used furniture and household electronics on hand. It was part of Free Furniture Amnesty Day, provided by HandsOn Kansas State and Manhattan Good Neighbors. Student Program Coordinator Amy Gasser tells KMAN the furniture was brought in during the morning, with shoppers arriving in the afternoon. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) Some students at two Kansas universities want Chick-fil-A removed from the campuses because of the fast-food chain’s stance on gay marriage. Online petitions began at Wichita State University and the University of Kansas after Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy said he opposed gay marriage. Some groups are boycotting Chick-fil-A, while others are supporting the fast-food chain. The petition at Wichita State had about 530 signatures early Friday.
