The culmination of a project that’s been ongoing since 1998, Fire Station #3, will be holding a grand opening ceremony on July 28th beginning at 10:30 am. Station and apparatus tours are available after the completion of the opening ceremony. Manhattan Fire Chief Jerry Snyder says that the station will hold rescue equipment, including the jaws of life and other tools. Also constructed on the premises will be a salt storage building to be used by the Public works department to service western Manhattan during and after winter storms. “It’s everything we expected,” Chief Snyder says of the new station.…

Several drug-related arrests have been made in Junction City, following a seven month long investigation. The Junction City-Geary County Drug Operations Group assisted by Junction City-Geary County SWAT, executed search warrants Friday at two locations including the Super 8 motel on East Sixth street and in the 900 block of East fourth street. Arrested were Alfred Wilson, 24, Sharon LIttleton, 44, and Deonerick Friend, 23, all of Junction City. Both Wilson and LIttleton face a variety of charges including possession of marijuana with intent to distribute within 1000 feet of a school and felony possession of drug paraphernalia. Unemployment numbers for the Manhattan metropolitan area this past month are up some from the month before, but steady with numbers from the same time last year. The Manhattan metro area includes Riley, Pottawatomie, and Geary counties–and a 5.9 percent rate was reported in June, compared to 5.2 in May, but the same as June of 2011. The Manhattan metro number is still the lowest in the state, with the closest metro area being Kansas City with a 6.1 percent rate. A trio of K-State football players have been nominated for the Walter Camp player of the year in college football. Sophomore Tyler Lockett was a Walter Camp first team all-American at kick returner last season, and senior defensive back Nigel Malone made the second team. Both Lockett and Malone are on the watch list along with Wildcat senior linebacker Arthur Brown. Fifty players from across the country have been put on the Walter Camp watch list for the award given to the nation’s most outstanding player. The Cats are one of three teams with three candidates. The others are Oklahoma and USC.

After coaching a national championship team, former K-State standout Claire Coggins has decided to return home. Wildcat women’s basketball coach Deb Patterson has hired Coggins as the program’s director of video operations. The two-time second team all-Big 12 guard scored 1,236 points, 19th on the all-time K-State list, and is 22nd in assists with 213. Coggins was a member of the 2004 Big 12 championship team and the 2006 WNIT MVP. The Independence, Missouri native played two professional seasons; with the WNBA’s Chicago Sky in 2007 and one year later in Greece. Coggins coached as an assistant for two years…
Wamego officials responded Tuesday night to a complaint about power outages. At Tuesday’s City Commission meeting, Mark Jensen, who lives in the 700 block of Lincoln Avenue, brought the issue of variations in power, power outages and brown-outs that occur in his neighborhood on a regular basis. He said he’s been a resident since 19-80, and the issue has been a problem for years. A hospital in Aurora, Colorado says it admitted patients after a shooting at a nearby movie theater. Some patients suffered from gunshot wounds and others from chemical burns caused by some sort of gas.
Jennifer Seeger escaped a shooting at a Colorado movie theater, but says the shooter pointed a gun at her face and shot people behind her. She says she crawled toward an exit when she saw a girl about 14 years old lying ‘lifeless’ on the stairs.
In his final warmup for the London Olympics, K-State’s Erik Kynard will high jump on Friday in Monaco. The Diamond League meet has ten competitors, nine of which are Olympians including fellow Americans Jesse Williams and Jamie Nieto, who both train under Wildcat coach Cliff Rovelto. Kynard arrived in Birmingham, England to begin training on Monday. He’ll jump in the Olympic prelims on August 5th, and the finals are August 7th. Friday’s warmup event begins at 1:05pm central time.
