MULVANE, Kan. (AP) Part of the permanent Kansas Star Casino near Mulvane will open next week as the venue begins the move out of its temporary facility. Officials with Kansas Star said Tuesday that the partial opening will reduce the number of days the casino will have to be closed during the transition. The Wichita Eagle reports the temporary casino will be open through midnight Dec. 9, close Dec. 10 and 11, then reopen at 8 a.m. Dec. 12 in a portion of the permanent casino. SALINA, Kan. (AP) Salina city commissioners are considering a $3.1 million proposal to upgrade lighting downtown. The Salina Journal reports that commissioners said this week that they liked the $3.1 million proposal by Johnson Controls to replace 347 outdated lights downtown with LED lights. If approved, the lights would be installed by Nov. 23, 2013. Johnson Controls says the current decorative lights, which the city owns, were installed in the 1980s and are outdated. FORT LEAVENWORTH, Kan. (AP) A Fort Riley military police company has been honored by the Army’s Corrections Command for its service in operating the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks. The Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 40th Military Police Battalion of the 15th Military Police Brigade, was presented Tuesday with the Brig. Gen. Thomas F. Barr Award. The unit competed against 13 other military police companies in the Army, including those stationed in Germany and South Korea. The next scheduling issue was brought before the Manhattan Ogden school board at their Wednesday meeting. Beginning the night, a report was given from the Manhattan High school scheduling task force on the different options for the board to consider. Of the three options, the present schedule at the high school was given, along with a six period schedule and a six plus one period schedule. The all-GOP Organization, Calendar and Rules Committee is expected to meet Monday. Under the Senate’s rules, it designates committee chairmen and makes committee assignments. The panel includes incoming Senate President Susan Wagle of Wichita, Vice President Jeff King of Independence and Majority Leader Terry Bruce of Hutchinson. GARDEN CITY, Kan. (AP) University of Kansas researchers have received a $40,000 grant to study how a southwest Kansas community’s 30-year population shift has changed local schools and what the results can teach educators across the country. The Wichita Eagle reports associate professor Jennifer Ng and professor Don Stull will conduct the study in Garden City, which has seen continuous immigration from around the world since the early 1980s. Uncertainty still follows as to who is running for the Manhattan Ogden school board, but another member has put in there bid to not run again. At Wednesday’s USD 383 school board meeting, Beth Tatarko made her statement saying that she has no intention of running for a seat. Tatarko came to the board after board member Doug Messer resigned his position leaving a vacant seat.
Two arrests have been made and more than $6,600 worth of methamphetamine seized according to Riley County police Wednesday morning. David Gibson (31) of Topeka and Kimberly Kilgore (25) were taken into custody on seven counts each, including possession of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute and conspiracy to distribute meth. Gibson was arrested for possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine, felon in possession of a firearm, misdemeanor and felony possession of drug paraphernalia, no Kansas Drug Tax Stamp, and unlawful acquisition of drug proceeds. A Budget Amendment Hearing opened Wamego’s City Commission meeting. On Tuesday, City Manager Merl Page called for the hearing due to the City exercising its option by calling the Public Building Commission bonds used finance Wamego City Hospital’s remodeling project. Page said calling the bonds will save under $300,000 in interest. The hearing was necessary to stay in budget compliance, and by approving the budget amendment, the Commissioner’s authorized City staff to make the necessary budget changes to make the $1.36 million dollar payment. Incumbents serving with two local governmental groups say they will not seek re-election. Manhattan City Commissioner Jim Sherow made that announcement during Tuesday’s night’s Manhattan City Commission meeting.
