A number of Cereal Malt beverage ordinances for the City of Manhattan are slated to be updated, and the process got going at last night’s Manhattan City Commission meeting. Outdated ordinances include one requiring establishments allowing dancing to obtain a dance license, and no dance license has been issued since 1998. What really stole the show was an item on the consent agenda which was discussed previously, the ordinance dealing with regulations on driveways. The ordinance was tabled after much discussion as well as a fair amount of public comment, and should be hammered out in the near future.
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) Joel C. Hernandez, then 22, waited in a small room at the Douglas County Courthouse on May 20, 2010. Minutes earlier, Douglas County District Judge Michael Malone sentenced Hernandez, a student at Haskell Indian Nations University, to six months in jail after Hernandez admitted driving drunk and killing bicyclist Rachel Leek, 20. “You’re going to live with her death for the rest of your life,” Malone told Hernandez. HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) Officials say the first phase of an electric transmission line from Kansas to Nebraska is up and running, and construction of the second phase is ahead of schedule. A spokesman for ITC Holdings says 90 miles of the high-voltage line from Spearville to near Hays was energized June 29 and is operating smoothly. That line ties into Midwest Energy’s system at Post Rock. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A judge has ruled that DNA testing will be allowed on potential evidence in the killing of an 18-year-old Topeka woman. District Judge Cheryl Kingfisher approved a request from prosecutors for DNA testing in the first-degree murder case against 21-year-old Dustin Leftwich. Leftwich has pleaded not guilty to kidnapping and murdering Brenna Morgart, whose body was found in a field near Topeka on May 25. Prosecutors say Leftwich intentionally hit Morgart with his vehicle. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Frontier Airlines has announced plans to halt its flights between Wichita and Denver. The Wichita Eagle reports that Frontier’s two daily flights from Wichita will end on Nov. 16. Frontier spokeswoman Lindsey Carpenter says the flights have been performing below average. Carpenter says the airline will contact travelers who have booked flights after Nov. 15, and offer them a flight on another airline or a refund. The move will leave United Airlines as the only airline flying from Wichita through Denver to western destinations. Allegiant operates flights from Wichita to Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Phoenix-Mesa.
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Residents wanting to vote in the upcoming Kansas primary election have until Tuesday to register. Voters statewide will be deciding primaries in numerous Republican and Democratic races for the Kansas House of Representatives and Senate, as well as the Democratic primaries for two of the state’s four U.S. House seats. Advanced voting for the Aug. 7 primary begins Wednesday and closes at noon Aug. 6. Eligible Kansas residents who aren’t registered to vote can register for the November general election between Aug. 8 and Oct. 16.
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback is scheduled to tour areas of the state hit hard by drought. The governor’s office says Brownback will be stopping in Saline County on Tuesday and then will be in Neosho and Labette counties on Wednesday. Brownback will tour northwest Kansas next week. Brownback will be joined by Tracy Streeter, director of the Kansas Water Office, and Dale Rodman, state agriculture director. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has declared 82 counties in Kansas federal disaster areas because of the ongoing dry conditions.
A Fort Riley Soldier has died in Afghanistan. Sgt. Erik May, 26, was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead at a medical facility in eastern Afghanistan on July 14. The cause of death is under investigation. May was an infantryman assigned to 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division which is currently deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. This was May’s second combat deployment with the ‘Dragon’ Brigade. He deployed to Iraq with the brigade headquarters in 2009. An Independence, Kan. native, May joined the Army in September 2007.
