K-State is still in the polls this week at 15-4. But, after losses to KU and Iowa State last week, the Cats are down seven spots to #18 in the AP poll, and eight spots to #21 in the USA Today coaches’ poll. Two of K-State’s four losses are the team splitting the top spot in the rankings at the moment. Michigan is #1 in the AP poll and Kansas is tops in the coaches poll. 1. A Lawrence man was arrested on early Tuesday morning for battery, and criminal damage to property at tManhattan’s Best Value Inn. According to Riley County Police reports19-year-old Steven Schoemate was arrested after assaulting John Christie, a front desk clerk. Police say during the altercation a window of the inn was broken valued over $1,000. Schoemate was released on a $1,500 bond. 2. A construction site on the northwest side of Manhattan was allegedly the location of a burglary. Intergovernmental leaders from the Manhattan area learned a bit more about the Metropolitan Planning Organization during a Monday meeting, with MPO Transportation Planner Stephanie Watts presenting a power point to the group. Watts indicated she was glad to visit with the diverse group. Watts was questioned about the relationship between the MPO and Flint Hills Regional council, which is housed in the same location with some sharing of personnel. A full audience was present for part of the Pottawatomie County Commission meeting on Monday as the Westmoreland Road bridge project was on the agenda. Community members came in to express their concerns about the detour that will come from the bridge project. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas legislators plan to take an unusually long spring break before returning to wrap up business this year. House Speaker Ray Merrick of Stilwell said Monday the change is part of efforts by his fellow Republican leaders to shorten the time in session from the traditional 90 days to 80 or even fewer. The House and Senate will begin the annual break April 6. Normally they would be gone 2.5 weeks and return April 24. But this year, they’ll reconvene May 8. HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) Some county health officials are concerned that the state’s decision to stop providing free HIV testing in most Kansas counties will cause a drop in services for people with the virus. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment notified most county counseling and testing providers last November that it would no longer provide free HIV testing, starting in January. The Kansas Health Institute says the state will continue to provide the service in 10 counties, which are generally the most populous and have more cases of HIV. LYONS, Kan. (AP) Kansas law enforcement officials are looking for a man who is allegedly impersonating a police officer while trying to cash fake checks. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and local law enforcement officials say they believe 45-year-old Robert Wayne Helms of Pittsburg might be connected to at least 25 cases. Belle Plaine Police Chief Gorden Fell says the man showed up in his town last week. Lyons police are investigating a similar case. In some instances, Helms flashes a fake badge and displays a gun. SALINA, Kan. (AP) Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina has a new president. The university announced Sunday that it has chosen Matthew Thompson, a vice president a Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Fla., to lead the school. Thompson will begin his duties April 15. He replaces Fletcher Lamkin, who resigned last June. The Salina Journal reports the university’s board of trustees chose Thompson unanimously from three finalists. Kansas Wesleyan University offers 25 undergraduate programs and one graduate program.
