SALINA, Kan. (AP) Hunters who fan out across Kansas Saturday for the start of quail and pheasant season are likely to find fewer birds. The Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism says two years of drought have reduced the birds’ population in most regions. Mike Miller, editor of the agency’s magazine, says the southwest corner of the state is expected to have the fewest number of birds. He says the extreme heat and dry conditions reduced nesting and brood habitat for the birds. The Salina Journal reports northwest and north-central Kansas were not as affected by the drought. And…

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Immigration officials have arrested 16 illegal immigrants during a three-day sweep across Kansas targeting criminals and fugitives. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Friday the arrests occurred in Wichita and surrounding communities and in Liberal and Dodge City. Fourteen of the immigrants were from Mexico, with one each from Guatemala and El Salvador. The agency says 11 of the men had prior convictions for crimes such as aggravated assault, aggravated battery, identity theft and domestic battery. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Officials of the Machinists union have released details of a contract offer that could end a month long strike at Bombardier Learjet’s Wichita aircraft plant. Union spokesman Bob Wood described the offer Friday as a “substantial improvement” over the proposal that prompted Oct. 8 walkout. The union is recommending approval when members vote Saturday. Bombardier Learjet is proposing a five-year contract that keeps wages unchanged in the first year but raises them 1 percent in each of the following years. It also includes a $2,500 signing bonus, and lowers employees’ share of health insurance premiums from the…

It was a day of celebration for Capstone 3-d and other businesses located in the newly restored building at the corner of Fourth and Poyntz Avenue. The building was originally constructed in 1890, but a major renovation  has opened the building up to not only Captstone 3-D development offices, but also government services, Fresh Hair Style and Barbershop, and Wells Fargo Advisors. Veteran’s Day has a history dating back to World War I and has since grown in the scope and magnitudes of celebrations. On Friday, the City of Manhattan had their annual Veteran’s Day Parade down Poyntz Avenue, followed by the Ceremony at the City Hall. Another person has been arrested in connection with the prominent Riley County murder case involving the death of Steve Freel. Tevin Bruce, 20, of Clay Center, was being held Friday on a $5,000 bond for failure to appear. Bruce was one of seven to be arrested in connection with the case.  His charges included conspiracy to commit burglary, obstruction of the legal process and aiding a felon. Over the past few weeks, KMAN has been on scene for the conviction of Domingo Soto and when Michael Layne entered a plea.

The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office continues to seek information on the driver and vehicle involved in a fatality accident on October 28 at about 12:09 a.m.  Konley L. Harding, 21, of Manhattan was struck and died as a result of this accident.  The vehicle has been described as a light colored SUV type vehicle.  Sheriff’s Detectives have identified a vehicle of interest that was in the area at the time of this accident.  This vehicle was on highway 24, and travelled South on K-99 in Wamego.  If you have any information call the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office at 785-457-3353.

The Manhattan Christian College volleyball team received several awards at the NCCAA National Awards Banquet in Kissimmee, Florida.  Head Coach Lauren Sanders was named the National Coach of the Year.  Coach Sanders had picked up her 200th career victory in the Regional Tournament at the end of October.   Sanders was selected from among the eight nominees from across the nation.  Kylie Rupe was one of 12 players named 1st Team All-American and Alyssa Strain and Paige Mortensen were named 2nd Team All-American.

PITTSBURGH (AP)   Todd Haley isn’t looking for revenge against the Kansas City Chiefs. The former Chiefs coach   now the Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator   says he’s trying to treat Monday night’s matchup between his former employer and his new one like just another game. Haley was fired by the Chiefs with three weeks left in the 2011 season. He insists he’s moved on and has no extra incentive to beat Kansas City.
