According to Riley County Police a Manhattan man has been the victim of a craigslist scam. 22 year old Tomas Kirielius of 1430 Hartman Place told RCPD that he had placed his 15 inch Mac Book pro on craiglist. Kirielius was asking for 1-thousand dollars, and was contacted by an unknown suspect to meet for the sale at the 2215 college avenue parking lot. Kirielius told police that when he arrived a white male with brown hair and medium build gave him a US Postal money order for 9-hundred and fifty dollars, and fifty dollars cash. Four teenagers arrested in connection with recent burglaries in Wamego waived their preliminary hearings today (Monday) and are set for arraignment in Pottawatomie County District Court August 18th. Bonds have been set at $10,000 for three of the four including 19-year-old Anthony Brazzle and 18-year-old Devereaux Dumas, both of Wamego and 18-year-old Ethan Straub of Belvue. Bond was set at$5,000 for 18-year-old Cody Torbol of Wamego due to lack of criminal history and the fact he cares for his disabled mother. K-State junior Rodney McGruder capped a successful trip to eastern Europe by being named to the Four Nations Cup all-tournament team. McGruder averaged 13.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.7 steals in three games for the East Coast All-Stars in Estonia. A 30-year-old Manhattan man was arrested early Sunday morning by Riley County Police and charged with aggravated assault, criminal damage to property, battery and aggravated battery. According to RCPD, Jason Avery Benton of 740 Crestwood Drive, Apartment 2, was arrested at his home around 1:30 yesterday morning. Benton’s total bond was set at 7-thousand dollars.
The Wildcat Watershed Area Working Group is set to meet for the second time since its creation this Thursday at 06:30 pm at Manhattan City Hall. The group’s mission is to investigate possible solutions to help mitigate the damage from flooding in the area, and find more efficient ways of notifying the public in case of a flooding emergency.
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The Kansas Supreme Court has upheld the Shawnee County conviction of a man given a “Hard 25” life sentence for a murder conviction. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that the court ruled Friday that the sentence was justified in the case of Jamil Michael Fulton who was convicted in the 2005 gang-related killing of Christopher Caraway. LYNDON, Kan. (AP) Osage County residents are paying higher taxes because of the upcoming capital murder trial for defendant James Kraig Kahler. Tiny Osage County, population 16,386, will pay more than $200,000 to stage Kahler’s trial, which begins Monday. County Commissioner Ken Kuykendall told The Topeka Capital-Journal that the $200,000 is specifically for the trial. Another $60,000 was spent on upgrading the courtroom where the trial will take place. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) A Douglas County judge has denied a rural Lawrence man’s request for a new trial after the man was convicted of molesting a 4-year-old girl. The Lawrence Journal World reports that attorneys for 69-year-old Richard Gonzalez alleged Friday that the Kansas Bureau of Investigation tested swabs taken from the girl’s body after the January verdict and determined Gonzalez’s DNA was not found on the swabs. A Manhattan teenager has died from injuries sustained in a one vehicle accident Friday night in the 2400 block of Marlatt Avenue. According to Riley County Police, the vehicle driven by Brett Bolton left the roadway and rolled. Police say bystanders pulled Bolton from the vehicle shortly before it was engulfed in flames. He was taken to Mercy Regional Health Center and then transported to Via Christi in Wichita, where Bolton passed at 8:30 Saturday morning. There were no passengers in the vehicle.
