Just last week the retirement of Riley County Police Detective Alan Riniker was announced, and RCPD Director Brad Schoen wasted little time in figuring out a way to have his job, primarily as a C-S-I lab technician, continue. Schoen suggested to Riley county law board members Monday a modification, with transition from an officer performing crime scene lab work, to a civilian position. The change was approved unanimously, with board member Wynn Butler extremely supportive, as the position means cost-savings. Daniel Brewer has been sentenced by Riley County courts Monday evening to two concurrent 12 to 20 year prison terms for 2 rapes that occurred in Ogden in 1981. Riley County District Judge David Stutzman reasoned the offenses were worthy of actual prison time, and proceeded to give Brewer the 2 prison sentences to be served concurrently, but gave Brewer time off for time already served. Eddie Lowery was present in the courtroom, and says he is relieved that Brewer received the prison sentence. Lowery was wrongfully convicted of one of the rapes and served a 10 year prison sentence. …
Wildcat Creek Road was reopened on Monday. Public works director Leon Hobson said there were a few minor problems when the road was inspected last week but it should be safe to commute on. “There were (about) three panels that had cracks in them, just slight cracks,” Hobson said. “We agreed with the contractor to wait until next year (to fix them). On Friday Riley County Police Captain Gary Grubbs and Detective Alan Riniker were given a retirement reception at City Hall. Both men are heading into retirement from the force, taking with them together totaling 78 years of experience. Director Brad Schoen described it as a sense of family, and praised the devotion and dedication of the two men who he says will be missed. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the entire KMAN Listening Area from 6 p.m. CST this evening until 6 p.m. CST Tuesday. Rain will develop later this afternoon and this evening and change to all Snow in the overnight hours before mixing with Sleet and Freezing Drizzle. Snow accumulations of five to eight inches are possible with this storm. Winds up 15 to 25 MPH are expected to accompany the storm and hazardous driving conditions should be expected. Turning two blocked kicks into touchdowns, the Pittsburg State (Kan.) Gorillas outlasted Wayne State (Mich.) 35-21 on Saturday in the Division II National Championship Football Game at Florence, Alabama. Zac Dickey led the way for the Gorillas with 190 yards passing. Pittsburg State won their second National Title in Division II with the other crown coming in 1991, the Gorillas had lost their three previous title game appearances. Pittsburg State also won NAIA Championships in 1957 and 1961.
