ATCHISON, Kan. (AP) The death of Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai is being mourned in Kansas, where she attended college. Maathai, a native of Kenya, died Sunday of cancer. The 71-year-old won the Nobel in 2004. She founded the Green Belt Movement, which mobilized poor women to plant trees to give them more access to resources. She was arrested and beaten by Kenyan authorities for her activism. Maathai was a 1964 graduate of at Mount St. Scholastica, which merged with St. Benedict’s in 1971 to form Benedictine College in Atchison. She returned to Benedictine four years ago to deliver…

FORT RILEY, Kan. — Irwin Army Community Hospital is seeking to identify and treat Soldiers and civilians potentially exposed to the rabies virus while deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan after March 2010. A Fort Drum Solider, who recently returned from Afghanistan, died Aug. 31 from rabies after being bitten by a feral dog while deployed. Irwin Army Community Hospital is working closely with Public Health nurses and brigade commanders whose groups recently returned from Iraq and Afghanistan to identify and treat Soldiers and civilians who may have been exposed to the virus. What to do about the sales tax continues to be a predominant topic at area meetings, with the matter coming up yet again Monday at the intergovernmental meeting in Manhattan. USD 383 officials have indicated an interest in the matter, especially in the area of economic development . Construction along K-18 continues to be a concern for Manhattan residents, with some of the motorists now using McDowell Creek Road as an alternate route. Police captain Tim Hegarty spoke to the Riley County  commission about the issue on Monday. “We’ve got two areas of concern,” Hegarty said. “The difference is we have accidents occurring on K-18. During its Monday meeting, the Riley County commission applauded the efforts of the police department for the arrest of 56-year old George Morgan. Morgan, a habitual offender, was booked last week on charges of aggravated burglary and attempted robbery. Only two victims have been identified presently but the damage extends well beyond the first two homes. “He’s responsible for at least 16 residential burglaries during a three to four day period,” police captain Tim Hegarty said. “We don’t know how many he’s been responsible for since he moved back into the community.” Hegarty feels the arrest will go a long way in…

Say Road near Wamego Middle School might see a change in speed limit by the end of October. The Pottawatomie County commission met Monday to confront the issue of speeding on the road during school hours. While there was no motion to make the road a  school zone, the commission did ask public works director Leu Lowrey to research the matter to see what needs to be done to change the speed limit. BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP)   The Southeastern Conference says Texas A&M is set to be join the league next year.  The SEC announced Sunday that the move will be effective next July, and says Texas A&M will participate in all sports during the 2012-13 academic year.  That gives the SEC 13 members and its first addition since South Carolina and Arkansas in 1992.  The Aggies’ defection from the Big 12 had been held up with threatened legal action from Baylor and other schools.  The statement released by the SEC did not mention that situation, and spokesman Charles Bloom did not immediately…
