IOLA, Kan. (AP) A 19-year-old volunteer firefighter from Iola is suspected of setting a series of arson fires in a southeast Kansas county. Allen County Undersheriff Bryan Murphy says the firefighter was arrested Tuesday while working at a grass fire. He could face 21 counts of arson in fires around Carlyle and Geneva townships. The Iola Register reports that 28 arson fires have been investigated in Allen County in the past month. Arrests have been made in Junction City in connection with several recent damage to property cases. Arrested Wednesday were Wayne King, 20, and Dean Murrietta Jr, 24, both soldiers stationed at Ft. Riley. The Junction City Police Department worked eighteen complaints involving damage to property, and one complaint of arson where a vehicle was set on fire early last Friday. The damage to property complaints involved three Junction City businesses having windows broken and 15 vehicles having one or more windows broken out of the vehicle. HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) Recycling at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility is going to the dogs. For about a year, inmates at the prison have been dismantling mattresses and recycling materials from the beds to raise money. Now, inmates are using foam and material from the mattresses to make dog beds. Those beds are being donated to animal shelters and sold in a veterinary clinic to help the prison’s dog training programs. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) The Kansas City Chiefs have put Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry on injured reserve and signed veteran Reshard Langford to provide depth in the defensive backfield. Berry tore the ACL in his left knee during the first quarter of Sunday’s season-opening loss to Buffalo. Coach Todd Haley said earlier in the week he expected Berry to miss the rest of the season. They’re alleging current players interfered with negotiations on the new collective bargaining agreement and kept money from the retirees. A Manhattan woman reported her wedding ring missing to Riley County police on Tuesday. 18-year old Heather Clarke of 8681 Anderson Avenue told police that her wedding band and engagement ring were stolen from her home during a party. The theft is believed to have occurred on August 27th between the hours of 4 p.m. and 12 midnight. The total loss is estimated to be $2,500. There are no suspects at this time and RCPD says the case is under further investigation.
Riley County police received a report Tuesday of a Manhattan home that was burglarized earlier this week. 33-year old Greg Peterson of informed RCPD that two jewelry boxes and a Gibson guitar were taken from his home located at 801 Laramie. The incident occurred on Monday between 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Peterson was not at his home during the time of the theft. The back door was also left unsecured during that time. The losses totaled $1,500. RCPD representatives have announced that there are no suspects at this time and that the case is under further investigation.
The case of two dogs that were brutally beaten in Leonardville is still under investigation; however, Riley County police have received a new lead in the case. Detective Ryan Runyan has learned that Heath Romine’s dogs had a history of aggressive behavior. There was an incident that occurred on Memorial Day in which the dogs left their owner’s home and chased calves around on another person’s property. A family pet was killed during the incident. RCPD has contacted several residents from the surrounding area in Leonardville and the belief is that the dog beatings may have been in retaliation to the happenings on Memorial Day. A…
