COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive welcomed Texas A&M as the 13th member of the league on Monday and says he doesn’t expect to add another team before the Aggies begin play next season. The SEC announced Sunday that Texas A&M would leave the Big 12 to join the conference next July and will compete in all sports for the 2012-13 academic year. The Aggies are the first newcomers since South Carolina and Arkansas joined the conference in 1992. K-State makes its second straight appearance on ABC as the Wildcats’ October 8 Big 12 Conference matchup with Missouri will be broadcast by the network beginning at 2:30 p.m., K-State and Big 12 officials announced on Monday. Saturday’s Big 12 opener against No. 15 Baylor will also be aired on ABC. It’s the first time since 2003 that multiple games will air on ABC during the same season. Tickets still remain for both the Baylor and Missouri games as fewer than 3,000 remain for this weekend’s Big 12 Conference opener between the 3-0 Wildcats and 3-0 Bears.
For the second straight week Kansas State middle blocker Kaitlynn Pelger has been recognized for her prowess on the court being named Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Pelger received the honor last week after averaging 5.19 kills per set over four matches. This week she repeats with an amazing average of 5.67 kills in a sweep over the Baylor Bears in K-State’s only action of the week. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Melky Cabrera became the first Kansas City player in 11 years to get 200 hits and Mike Moustakas hit the go-ahead home run in a four-run sixth inning as the Royals topped the Minnesota Twins 7-3 on Monday night. Cabrera, who hit an infield single and scored the game’s opening run in the first inning and added another infield single in the sixth, became the sixth player in Kansas City history to eclipse 200 hits and the first since Johnny Damon and Mike Sweeney both did it in 2000. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) The Justice Department is suing to recover more than $1.8 million from a Coffeyville refinery for unpaid cleanup costs stemming from a 2007 oil spill into floodwaters of the Verdigris River. A civil complaint filed Friday in U.S. District Court also seeks a court order forcing Coffeyville Resources Refining Marketing to comply with environmental regulations to prevent further discharges. It also is asking for civil penalties for violations. Company spokesman Steve Eames says the company is aware of the lawsuit but has not been served yet with it. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) About 200 people turned up in Topeka to tell officials from the U.S. State Department what they think about the proposed Keystone XL pipeline, which would move oil to the Texas coast from Canada. Gov. Sam Brownback and several other Kansas politicians said at the opening of the meeting Monday they support the $7 billion pipeline, which Brownback called “a good thing for America, and a good thing for Kansas.” Rabbi Moti Rieber, coordinator of Kansas Interfaith Power Light, said he’s opposed to the 1,700-mile pipeline, which he considers a “direct threat” to the Kansas environment. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Cessna Aircraft Co. has unveiled a new light business jet it plans to build at one of its Kansas facilities. The Citation M2 announced Monday aims to fill the market gap between the company’s Citation Mustang and the Citation CJ planes. The $4.2 million aircraft has room for two crew members and six passengers. It can go faster and farther than the Mustang with a cruise speed of 400 knots and a range of 1,300 nautical miles. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A legislative oversight committee is scheduled to get the results of a new audit of state programs aimed at determining if there are disincentives in Kansas policies that keep couples from marrying. The audit was conducted by the Legislative Division of Post Audit staff looking at various state benefit programs. The results will be presented Tuesday at a meeting in Topeka. Gov. Sam Brownback’s administration has put an emphasis on finding ways the state can change its policies to encourage couples to choose marriage.
