Discovery Center Cornerstone dedicated

A centuries old tradition was observed in Manhattan today (Friday) with a cornerstone dedication ceremony of the Flint HIlls Discovery Center by the Masons of Kansas.  Also present for the ceremony was Kansas Secretary of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism Robin Jennison, who talked about trying to promote the treasure of the tall grass prairies, and the importance of what is on the cornerstone of the Flint HIlls Discovery Center to “inspire, interpret,  explore, ” but the most importantly  to “preserve. ”

Manhattan Mayor Jim Sherow commented on the appropriateness of the windy day, saying our community has been on a long journey reaching this goal.

Lafayette Lodge Number 16 of Manhattan coordinated the event, but Masons from other parts of the state were present for the half-hour ceremony, which included the ceremonial sprinkling of grain, wine, and oil for the corenrston’e consecration.

The center will explore the geology, biology, and cultural history of the Flint Hills. It  isn’t open for business yet, with exhibits to be prepared for the interior of the facility and landscaping yet to be completed. Hopes are to have that opening in April.
