Eastern Kan. deputy dies of unknown cause

OTTAWA, Kan. (AP) An eastern Kansas sheriff’s office has lost its second deputy in four months after 28-year-old Russel Geist died of unknown reasons.

Franklin County Sheriff Jeff Curry said Thursday that Geist fell ill Wednesday morning and died at an Ottawa hospital that night.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports Geist was the son of retired Ottawa Police Detective Rick Geist. Curry says the younger Geist started work with the Sheriff’s Office in 2005 and was promoted to deputy in September 2010.

Franklin County Deputy Samuel Smith died in July when his patrol car left the road and hit a tree while he was responding to an emergency call.
