Economic development on Manattan City Commission agenda

The Manhattan city commission will meet Tuesday to review economic development figures from the previous year.

Assistant City Manager Jason Hilgers says its been a good year for the city’s workforce.

Hilgers was encouraged by the way certain companies like Farrar and Florence Corporation have bounced back after being hit by the economic downturn of 2009. Additionally, some of the companies like GTM Sportswear and Flint Hills Beverage continue to show signs of growth in 2011.

Officially, there is only one item on Tuesday’s agenda; however, Hilgers indicated he expects the commission to delve into another issue, the county’s half-cent sales tax. The possibility of a city tax and a county tax has been discussed.

The work session begins tomorrow at 5 p.m. inside the City Commission room at City Hall on Poyntz Avenue. The meeting will be televised live on Cox Cable Channel Three
