K-State would take an early seven-run lead, only to surrender that edge, before scoring five in a row to claim a 13-10 victory over Nebraska on Wednesday night to sweep the season series in a game played at Hawks Field in Lincoln, NE.
The Cats leapt out to an 8-1 lead, including a five-run second inning keyed by a Jared King two-run double. The Huskers worked their way back with a three-run third to pull within 8-4, and had their own five-run outburst in the fifth to pull ahead 9-8.
K-State fired back in the sixth inning with three runs including a go-ahead RBI single from R.J. Santigate to climb back in front 11-9. The Cats would add two more in the seventh, and Nebraska could only muster a single run in response during the eighth.
King and Santigate each went three-for-five at the plate with three RBI’s to lead K-State. Hayden Nixon (2-0) took the win by getting the Cats’ final two outs of the fifth inning. Tanner Witt came on in the ninth inning to close the game for his sixth save.
Nebraska’s Tyler King (1-4) took the loss, giving up two runs in the sixth without recording an out. Kash Kalkowski had three hits and tied for the Huskers’ team-high with two RBI’s.
K-State (29-13) will welcome TCU to town for a three-game Big 12 series starting on Friday night at 6:30pm at Tointon Family Stadium. Pregame begins at 6:00 on SportsRadio 1350 KMAN from the K-State Sports Network.
