Lilla Porubek came thru with 16 kills as K-State beat Cal Poly 25-21, 25-21, 25-27, and 29-27 on Friday night at the Hilton Garden Inn Invitational in Berkeley, CA. The win over the Mustangs came a night after the Cats’ seven-match winning streak was snapped by Santa Clara.

K-State pulled away late in each of the first two sets, and led 20-16 in the third set before Cal Poly scored 11 of the final 16 points to prevent a sweep. The favor was returned by the Wildcats in the fourth frame as the Mustangs led by as many as seven points and also held a 20-16 edge before K-State came firing back. The Cats converted their third match point on a kill by Taylor Johnson off a quick set by Katie Brand.

Porubek was joined in double figure kills by Kaitlynn Pelger with 14, Courtney Traxson with 12, and Dakota Kaufman with 10. Brand was one off her career high with 49 assists. Porubek topped her K-State (8-1) mark with 18 digs, while Pelger had four blocks. Cal Poly (4-4) was led in kills by Chelsea Hardin’s 15.

K-State will get their first shot at a ranked team this season when they face undefeated and #23 Cal on their home floor Saturday afternoon at 3:00pm central time. Pregame begins at 2:30 from Haas Pavilion on kstatesports.com.
