A 25 year old Fort Riley soldier has been arrested on first degree murder and criminal discharge of a firearm charges, in connection with the New Year’s Day shooting death of a 21 year old Manhattan man.
Daniel Parker of Junction City has been taken into custody and faces a one million dollar bond. The charges relate to shots being fired early Sunday morning that resulted in the death of National Guard Specialist Frederick Beverly.
Riley County Police director Brad Schoen told reporters this (Friday) morning there’s been a lot of investigative work going on the past five days, with the nexus of the shooting determined to be a disagreement that began in a Junction City bar, later resulting in shots being fire in the 18-hundred block of Fairlane, and death of Beverly.
A Fort Riley official at the news conference indicated Parker is a Specialist with the Army’s 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 163 Armor, 1st Infantry Division. He has been at Fort Riley since May of 2008 and served two tours in Iraq, returning from the last tour this past fall.
Beverly was a specialist with the National Guard.
