Police Seek Phony Officer

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) Authorities are asking again for help finding an ex-convict who’s been traveling around Kansas posing as a law enforcement officer and cashing phony personal and payroll checks.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation released a list Tuesday of 24 cities throughout the state where Robert Wayne Helms, 45, of Pittsburg, has pulled the scam.

The ruse was first reported Jan. 6 in southeastern Kansas, where Helms flashed a fake badge and showed a gun. He claims to be a deputy from Adams County which does not exist in Kansas.

The Hutchinson News reports Helms has recently been in western Kansas, passing bad checks written in the name of Steve Bundy a KBI special agent working on the case.

Helms has past convictions for forgery, theft and kidnapping.
