Preliminary hearing set for suspected Collegian newspaper thief

By Brandon Peoples on November 8, 2019 Local News, Manhattan

A preliminary hearing is scheduled later this month for a Manhattan man charged with multiple crimes including motor vehicle theft and burglary.

At a Nov. 5 status conference, 35-year-old Brewster Lee Jones appeared with his attorney Phylemon Yau  where a one-hour setting was scheduled for 9 a.m. on Nov. 22 in front of Judge William Malcolm. Jones is accused in the October 7 felony theft of a Ford Explorer near Kedzie Hall. That vehicle also contained several K-State Collegian newspapers that were set to be delivered that morning. The estimated total loss was more than $500 to the student run university newspaper. Jones faces a misdemeanor theft charge in connection.

A complaint filed in Riley County District Court also alleges Jones with burglary of a motor vehicle involving an Ascension Via Christi Health transport bus as well as an additional misdemeanor theft charge. Other charges include one count of interference with a law enforcement officer and one count of criminal use of a financial card.

Jones remains jailed on a $9,000 bond.
