Riley County commissioners voted 2-1 to cancel the asbestos removal for the First Christian Church building.

Commission Chair John Ford brought up the idea during Monday’s meeting, citing the unknown future of the property due to its historical designation.

Ford also is troubled with the having to ask permission for any improvement or demolition projects done to the building. He would rather have the $18,000 allocated for something else until they have a better vision.

Commissioner Greg McKinley was against cancelling the project, saying they could add the expenses on to the price of the property if they sell it. He also says there’s a chance no one buys the property.
