TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback is endorsing fellow conservative Republican Rick Perry in his bid for the party’s nomination for president.

Brownback, who has long been close friends with Perry, said Thursday he was backing the Texas governor’s candidacy. He will fly to Florida later in the day to attend a GOP debate as Perry’s guest.

The two governors have had a close relationship for years. In August, Brownback attended a prayer rally hosted by Perry in Houston.

Brownback is the second governor to back Perry, following Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal.

Brownback is in his first term as governor after serving in the U.S. Senate. He briefly sought the 2008 GOP presidential nomination.
