ABILENE, Kan. (AP) Kansas is marking the 121st birthday of President Dwight D. Eisenhower with a series of events.
Eisenhower was born Oct. 14, 1890, in Texas but grew up in Abilene, location of his presidential library and museum. He was a five-star Army general during World War II and was elected the 34th president of the United States in 1952.
Students from Abilene and Chapman will be immersed in Eisenhower history and the culture of the 1950s at the museum Thursday and Friday. They’ll also receive a behind-the-scenes tour of the presidential archives and museum.
Veterans will hold a vigil on Oct. 14 over Eisenhower’s final resting place on the grounds of the museum. A wreath-laying ceremony and dinner takes place the next day.
