WICHITA, Kan. (AP) The Wichita school district says that beginning Monday it won’t allow students to attend school if they aren’t up to date on their required immunizations.
The Wichita Eagle reports that more than 1,000 Wichita students could be pulled out of class Monday and not allowed to return until their immunizations are up-to-date.
Kansas schools allow an unvaccinated child to attend school if the child has an annual written statement from a doctor saying that the child’s health would be endangered by undergoing the inoculation or if the parent or guardian has signed a written statement saying the child is not immunized because of religious reasons.
Kathy Hubka, coordinator of health services for the district, said school nurses have been notifying parents since last spring about the requirements.
