Youth was no barrier for Manhattan High grad Steve Andrus, as he nearly qualified for the 2012 London Olympic games over the weekend. Andrus is a senior-to-be on the Michigan State wrestling team, but is also one of the best young Greco-Roman wrestlers in the country. In Greco-Roman, only the upper body can be used to wrestle and not the legs. The former Indian and current Spartan was a wild card at 120 kilograms, and went 3-0 in the challenge bracket. Andrus wrestled 2008 Olympian Dremiel Byers of the US Army in the finals, but was defeated 2-0. Andrus didn’t qualify for London, but will now be a part of the US Olympic program. He is a heavyweight for Michigan State, and wrestled in the NCAA championships this past season, where he went 1-2.
