The fire that occurred early Saturday morning, at The Salvation Army, located at 310 Poyntz Avenue, in Manhattan, has been ruled an incendiary fire by investigators. The result of the scene examination concluded the fire originated in the middle portion of the building. Sufficient evidence was recovered during the investigation to eliminate all known potential accidental ignition sources and determine the fire was intentionally set.
Fire investigators from the Manhattan Fire Department, in cooperation with the Riley County Police Department are currently working on the investigation.
Manhattan Fire Chief also thanks the Topeka Fire Department for sending their arson dog to Manhattan for the investigation.
Damage estimates are $100,000 to othe structure and $50,000 to contents.
In addition to the thrift store, the fire impacted church and counselling services provided at the Salvation Army building.
