Below is a press release from the Kansas Department of Revenue, Division of Vehicles sent Friday afternoon after yet another glitch with the tag renewal system. As a result, motorists whose last names begin with H or I now have until July 13 to renew their tags….
The Kansas Department of Revenue, Division of Vehicles has asked law enforcement to extend a two week grace period for drivers with tags expiring June 30.
The grace period will extend to July 13 and will apply to those with last names starting with H or I, or vehicles with 30 day temporary tags expiring June 30.
Because most Kansas counties do not have a backlog of renewals and have seen their lines return to normal, local law enforcement will use their professional discretion in applying the grace period in their counties.
Friday, the state system experienced a widespread slowdown where counties were able to process some transactions but fewer than normal. The last day of any month is typically the busiest day for counties as people renew their vehicle tags before those expire.
While the system has made significant progress during its two months of operation and has successfully handled more than 281,000 transactions in June, problems such as the one Friday continue to sporadically interrupt counties’ ability to serve their customers.
“I understand and am very sorry for people’s frustration when they are trying to fulfill their responsibility as a vehicle owner and are unable to do so for reasons out of their control,” said Revenue Secretary Nick Jordan. “We are working tirelessly with 3M and won’t settle for anything less than the best system for Kansas for decades to come.”
As was reported Thursday, the Department of Revenue sent a letter of non-conformance yesterday to the contractor 3M Co. notifying them that the state will not sign off on the project nor make final payment until remaining system performance issues are resolved to the state’s satisfaction.
