Social Service funding has been a sticking point for many in the Manhattan community, originating with last year’s budget process. Last night, the situation was the main event at the Manhattan City Commission meeting. The ordinance and petition by Save our Social Services was brought up for review and a final decision. The question put forth to the Commission was whether or not the ordinance and petition put forth by Save our Social Services would be put to a public vote, denied, or tabled for later discussion and consideration. To the dismay of many in the crowd, the ordinance would not go any further, with a four to one majority agreeing with the City Attorney’s opinion that the ordinance was administrative, and thus would go no further. The lone dissenter on the final vote was Commissioner Jim Sherow.
